Allen S. Wagner

February 13, 1950-August 12, 2024

Allen S. Wagner, 74, Altoona, passed away Monday evening at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Gerald S. and Madeline (Corbin) Wagner, Sr.

Allen married Deborah A. Shaffer on December 3, 1977 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Altoona.

He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah of 46 years; two daughters: Sarah Fetterman (Eric) of Pittsburgh and Emma McFee (Brian) of Altoona; two grandchildren: Grant and Madeline Fetterman; his sister: Darnyl Vermeire of Hughesville; nephew, Andrew Vermeire (Krystal) and their children: Carter & Alexia Vermeire; nephew, Stephen Vermeire (Jennifer) and their children: Madeline & Luke Vermeire; a sister-in-law, Sandra Wagner; nieces, Jennifer Fye (Doug) and Jessica Reehl (Eric Baith) and their children: Lincoln, James & Alicia Baith.

Allen was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald “Steven” Wagner, Jr.

He was a 1968 graduate of Altoona High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in quantitative business analysis from Penn State University.

Allen retired as a Captain from the City of Altoona Fire Department with over 30 years of service. He also worked with his wife, Deborah, as owner/operator of Wagner’s Greenhouses for over 40 years.

He had been a member of the Bavarian Aid Society and the secretary of the Fireman’s Pension Fund for over 20 years.

Allen loved Penn State football, he had been a former season ticket holder and looked forward to the Pitt/PSU rivalry every year. He enjoyed competitive rifle shooting, playing pool with several local leagues; and was an avid poker player, where he qualified for a National Tournament in Las Vegas!

Allen was a handyman and woodworker, completing projects for the family and friends. He made himself available to help others, anyone or anytime.

He genuinely looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren every chance he got, attending their sporting events, activities and celebrating their accomplishments with all his family & friends. He loved the annual family beach vacations and always looked forward to spending time at the family farmhouse. During those family moments, he loved time together over a meal or playing games, such as Catch Phrase of which he was an avid player. Allen was the life of the party and could weave an amazing story with his wit and sense of humor.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at the Bavarian Aid Society, 112 S. 13th St., Altoona, PA 16602.

Arrangements are provided by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.

So very sorry to hear of Allen's passing. I have known him all through school and graduation. Always bought our plants from him for the garden and would chat with him at the Geenwood restaurant. May God bless your family and grant you peace.🙏
