Obituary For Alphonse "Al" J. Covino

Alphonse J. “Al” Covino May 22, 1923-Sept. 15, 2022

Alphonse J. “Al” Covino, 99, Altoona passed away Thursday at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Sabato and Rose (Pinta) Covino. Alphonse married Betty L. Liebal on Feb. 6, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Williamsburg, Pa. Al is survived by his wife of 68 years; two sons: James P. Covino (Susan) of Naples, Fl. and Jeffery A. Covino (Dawn Ann) of Altoona; four grandchildren: Daniel Covino (Hannah), Michael Covino (Shannon), Nicholas Covino (Lo) and Tara Vogt (Chad) and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Covino of Altoona; a sister, Christina Raia of Altoona. He was preceded in death by sisters, Filomina Iavasile and Josephine Ciaverella; brothers: George Maria, Nick Gesumaria, Carl Maria and Louis Maria. Al served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater, 18th Air Force, 97th Service Group 384th Service Squadron. Al worked at Fiore Furniture for many years before he and his wife, Betty, owned and operated Montgomery Ward Catalog Sales Agency and Covino Home Furnishings, along with his sons, Jim and Jeff. Al was also co-owner of the Altoona Mattress Manufacturing Company. He previously retired from the Pennsylvania Railroad. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Al was a member of the Park Hills Country Club where he served as President for many years, A&J Iaia American Legion, Buccinese Society and was a life member of the UVA Club. He enjoyed reading, walking, playing golf and bocce. Al especially loved spending time with his family. Friends are invited to a committal service with military honors that will be held at Calvary Cemetery Chapel at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 21, 2022, with Fr. Carl Spishak officiant.
