Andrew D. “Dan” Maier

December 23, 1933-March 15, 2026

Andrew D. “Dan” Maier, 92, of Hollidaysburg, formerly of Altoona, passed away Sunday, at UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. He was born in Altoona the son of the late Ludwig and Margaret (Strassburger) Maier.

Dan is survived by his brother, Carl “Moonie” Maier of Altoona and his sister, Dorothy Bauer of Menominee, WI; also, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: John, Ludwig, Willibald Maier; and three sisters: Mary Bernhart, Irene Engelman and Anna Letcher.

Dan was a 1952 graduate of Altoona High School and a 1964 graduate of Shippensburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in education.

He was in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and served in Germany from 1956-1957.

Dan retired as a history teacher with 28 years of service from Curwensville School District.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Dan also belonged to the Bavarian Aide Society, Unter Uns, Swiss Club and the Buccinese. He was a member of PSEA, NEA, and the Pennsylvania Association of Teacher Retirees.

He enjoyed sports, especially, bocce, football and baseball. Dan also liked traveling.

Friends will be received from 3-5 pm, Thursday, March 19, 2026 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Friday, March 20, 2026 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, with Fr. Mariusz Gorazd, celebrant. Committal will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made in Dan’s memory to: St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602.

The family would like to thank the Sister’s and staff of Garvey Manor for their great care for Dan over the years.
