Obituary For Barbara A. Savino

Barbara A. Savino March 23, 1943-Jan. 25, 2023

Barbara A. Savino, 79, Hollidaysburg, passed away Wednesday, at Homewood at Martinsburg after a brief illness. She was born in Altoona, the daughter of the late Loraine T. and Ruth (Alloway) Grogan. Barbara married Lawrence M. Savino on Jan. 31, 1981 at the Penn State Altoona Chapel. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 43 years; three children: Marie Routman (David) of Columbus, OH, Jeffrey L. Savino (Amy) of Altoona , and Cherilyn Manney Pike (Robert) of Darian, IL; nine grandchildren: Alex and Ben Routman, Josh, Julia and Adam Savino, Max and Mia Manney, Ava and Ashley Pike. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Grogan. Barbara was a 1984 graduate of Mount Aloysius College where she received her Associate of Science in Nursing and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1987 from Saint Francis College. She continued her education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned her Master of Science in Nursing in 1990. Barbara was led in 1999 to pursue her PHD from Penn State University and finished in 2006. She was a critical care registered nurse with over 42 years of service at UPMC Altoona. Barbara taught nursing at Altoona Hospital for Nursing for 10 years and when they closed, she taught the Senior level nursing for 17 years at Penn State, University Park Campus and retired in 2012. Barbara was a member at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. She was very involved in the community and loved volunteering and giving of her time with; American Heart Association: Heart Walk and Heart Ball; MS Society: MS Walk and Return to Romance Ball; Allegheny Ballet Co.; Operation Small Steps; Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art: Gala Chairperson, Leadership Circle and Altoona Think Pink volunteer.

In April of 2015, Barbara was recognized with two prestigious awards: Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, presented her with Volunteer of the year and Wise Women of Blair County gave her the Tribute Award for her dedication to arts and the community. Barbara enjoyed reading, traveling and seeing the world. Most especially she enjoyed helping people and spending time with her grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2-6 pm on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Monday, Jan. 30, 2023 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 301 Spruce St., Hollidaysburg, Pa. 16648, with Fr. Alan Thomas, celebrant. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery. The family requests that contributions be made in Barbara’s memory to one of her favorite organizations: Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, 1210 11th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16601, We Care Foundation, 501 Valley View Blvd., Altoona, Pa. 16602, or St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 301 Spruce St., Hollidaysburg, Pa. 16648.
