Obituary For Barbara R. Neral

Barbara R. Neral May 19, 1941-Aug. 3, 2021

Barbara R. Neral, 80, died at home in Graystone Court Villa in Altoona on August 3, 2021 of complications of post-polio syndrome and esophageal cancer. She was born in Lancaster, PA on May 19, 1941 to the late John M. and Maria (McEvoy) Ranck. She married Gene P. Neral in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Lancaster, PA on November 17, 1962. Barbara contracted polio at the age of 13 and spent several years in the Elizabethtown State Crippled Children’s Hospital. In 1988 she was diagnosed with Post-Polio Syndrome. She graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1959 and attended Millersville State College. She is survived by her husband, Deacon Gene P. Neral; sons: James W. Neral (Karen) of Pittsburgh and children: Timothy and Christopher, David M. Neral (Kimberly) of Frederick, MD and children: Dannielle and Nicholas; daughter-in-law, Rachel C. Neral of Abingdon, MD; brothers: John M. Ranck of Lancaster, sisters: Claire Greenawalt of Lemoyne and Burneta Barley (Gregory) of Huntersville, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her youngest son Jeffrey S., who was killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in 2009 and a brother Kenneth E. Ranck in 2019. At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing or visitation at the Funeral Home. Visitation for the family and friends will be at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 309 Lotz Ave., Lakemont, Altoona, Pa. 16602 from 9:30-10:45 prior to the funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, celebrated by The Most Reverend Bishop Mark L. Bartchak. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Altoona. In lieu of flowers, contributions will be greatly appreciated to: The Barbara R. Neral Endowment for the Diaconate c/o Independent Catholic Foundation, 3618 5th Ave., Ste. 1, Altoona, Pa. 16602 or memorial contributions to be made to: Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 309 Lotz Ave., Lakemont, Altoona, Pa. 16602.
