Obituary For Barbara "Sis" A. Fraundorfer

Barbara A. ‘Sis’ Fraundorfer

June 6, 1932 – Aug. 21, 2025

“Well done my good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21

Barbara A. “Sis” Fraundorfer, 93, was peacefully received into His Kingdom on Thursday, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Joseph and Genevieve (Porta) Banholzer.

She married Fred Fraundorfer on April 28, 1962, sharing 57 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 2019.

Surviving are her four children: Mary (Mark) Thayer, Paul (Jen) Fraundorfer, John (Terri) Fraundorfer and Joni (Augusto) Fraundorfer. She was blessed with seven grandchildren: Kelsey (Will) Brett, Cory and Luke Thayer, Joy, Grace, Emma and Alexis Fraundorfer; and two great-grandchildren, Freddie and Genevieve Brett, who were the light of her life. She has a surviving sister in New York, Marianne Korpics; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Pete Banholzer; and grandson, Jude Fraundorfer.

In her early life, Sis was a medical technologist, and after her kids were grown, the Director of Religious Education for Our Lady of Lourdes Church. When she retired, she volunteered many hours at the Church and as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at both Mercy Hospital and UPMC Altoona. Her true calling was being an amazing full-time mother and grandmother, a blessing in the life of her family.

Sis was a peaceful warrior in spreading her unconditional faith to all who met and knew her, by both words and actions. Her legacy continues with the strong faith she instilled in her children and grandchildren, for which we are forever grateful.

She was a master “untrained” seamstress, always ready to attach a button, fix a hem, or alter a garment for her family and neighbors. Her flower garden was a source of pride, specifically her roses, which bloomed abundantly, especially the last week of her life. Her love was shown in the care of her cooking, from homemade popsicles to German sugar cookies, and her famous meatballs, which are now passed down to the next generation and filled with her memory and love.

We hope the music she loved to sing beautifully and play skillfully on her piano will be echoed in our lives. It was her privilege and honor to sing the Ava Maria at many funerals throughout her life.

In her last few years, Sis enjoyed cheating through countless games of 500 Rummy, running the table at Scrabble and taking car rides for ice cream. She was a talented laundry folder and a true wing-woman for all her daughter’s errands, even at a moment’s notice.

The family is forever grateful to the staff of Graystone Manor, Altoona, for the care that Sis received.

Family and friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2025, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral Mass will follow at noon at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Ave., Altoona, with Father James Dugan and Father Dennis Kurdziel.

Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Sis’s memory. For those who cannot contribute or are just reading this, a simple prayer for Sis would be greatly appreciated.

Condolences may be made at www.stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook page.

Dear Paul, Jen and the Fraundorfer family: I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. What a great life walking the earth for 93 years and spreading God's joy to her family and the whole community. When my father was in his last year (2014-15) he was in and out of Altoona Hospital. I was with him a number of times when your mother visited with Holy Communion. She would always spend a little extra time talking to Dad and me to make sure everything was as good as it could be. Unfortunately, I cannot get to Altoona for the funeral on Thursday as I have minor surgery scheduled this week. Please know that my prayers are with you and your family. Sincerely, Jim Hensler Arlington, VA
