Carl F. “Moonie” Maier
April 30, 1928-August 16, 2026
Carl F. “Moonie” Maier, 98, of Altoona, passed away Sunday at James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center.
Moonie married Joan C. Karcz on August 31, 1957, she preceded him in death on July 16, 2025.
He is survived by his three sons: Carl F. Maier, Jr. (Karan) of Texas, John J. Maier of Florida and Christopher A. Maier of Altoona; two daughters: Corinne A. Baker (John) of Altoona and Joanie M. Hoover (Terry) of Shermans Dale; twelve grandchildren: Joseph, Kevin, Jeremy, Carla, Jeff, Tiffany, Sarah, Michael, Christine, Adam, Alexa and Alaina; thirteen great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothy Bauer (Edward) of Wisconsin and many nieces and nephews.
Moonie was preceded in death by his siblings: Mary Bernhart, Anna Letscher, Louis Maier, Willie Maier, Hans Maier, Danny Maier and Irene Engleman.
He was a graduate of Altoona High School and a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Army.
Moonie retired from Conrail as an Assistant General Foreman.
He was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Moonie was a member of the Unter Uns Musical Society, the Swiss Club and the Buccinese Club.
Moonie enjoyed gardening, cooking, bowling where he was proud of bowling two 300 games. He liked playing horseshoes and had been a legend at bocce. During his time in the Army, he played baseball in Korea, Japan and Hawaii. Continuing his love of baseball, he played for the minor leagues and in Canada. Also later enjoying umpiring softball.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the VA Hospice team and nursing staff for their care.
Friends will be received from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, Friday, August 21, 2026 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 am, Saturday, August 22, 2026 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
Committal will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Altoona with military honors.
The family kindly requests that contributions be made in Moonie’s memory to: St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
