Obituary For Catherine Joan Douglass

Catherine Joan Douglass July 12, 1938-May 24, 2021

Catherine Joan Douglass, 82, of the Presbyterian Village, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Claysburg, passed away Monday. She was born in Altoona, the daughter of the late John and Bertha Haddock. Catherine married Lylial Douglass in 1974 and raised two children, Bertha Moore and James. She spent many holidays with Bertha and her husband, and they spoke nearly every day. Catherine is survived by Bertha and James both of Altoona. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Lylial and one of her best friends and housemates, Marie. Catherine became best friends with her most ardent supporter, Teddie Leiden, who helped Catherine live a life full of friends, meaningful work and some time off to do the things she enjoyed, such as taking short vacation trips and gambling. She spent many great years with her best friend, Marie, spending time doing crafts, watching TV and cooking and cleaning together. Catherine was a hardworking employee of Skills Group, Inc. and retired at age 79. She most recently spent time with the staff and friends at Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries day program where she was encouraged to think, sing and love. Catherine had a great smile and wonderful laugh with a huge zest for life. She was very appreciative of those who have helped her over the years and made sure everyone knew she was glad to see them and thanked them for what they did for her. She would always remember to send birthday cards to family and friends. Catherine loved having her support staff help her get dressed up and pick out special jewelry to wear. She made wonderful yarn stitched placemats which she shared with her many friends and support staff. Catherine also spent time doing word and gambling games on her computer, generally losing large amounts of “cash” in the end. She never seemed to feel bad about those losses. Catherine also enjoyed bowling, dancing and watching TV with friends. Catherine will be sadly missed by her friend and housemate, Donna; Connie, who Catherine called ‘Mom’; and all the Ski Gap home and Mattern House friends who helped her live the good life. Her friend Diane who she had known for many years; JoEllen, who helped her make sure she had money to do the things she loved; the North Star Support Service staff, who helped make sure her life had all the things in it that she wanted and needed. And her new friends at the Presbyterian Village who worked hard to make her happy and comfortable. Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m., Friday, May 28, 2021 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc, 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. at The Stevens Memorial Chapel with Rev. Douglas McGaffin officiating. Interment will be held at Mines Methodist Cemetery, Oremina, Pa. Contributions can be made in Catherine’s memory a charity of your choice. Condolences may be made at www.stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook.
