Catherine “Katie” Gehl, 101, of Altoona, passed away Friday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was born in Altoona, the daughter of John and Julianna (Wieland) Horell.
Katie married Frederick J. Gehl on June 19, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona. He preceded her in death on August 10, 1993.
She is survived by her daughter, Helene C. Flick (John) of Aubrey, TX; her son, Joseph A. Gehl, II of Altoona; six grandchildren: Adam Flick (Staci), Eric Flick (Holly), Ellen Flick, Natalie Monahan (Troy), Joseph A. Gehl, III (Kathryn) and Alexander Gehl; one great-granddaughter, Sofia Katherine Flick and five great-grandsons: Jack L. Flick, Brycen T. Monahan, Tate J. Flick, Carter S. Monahan and Chance L. Flick; also surviving are her two sisters-in-law: Rita Horell and JoEllen Gehl.
Katie was the last of her immediate family and was preceded in death by her nine siblings: three brothers and six sisters; also, her daughter-in-law, Sheila Gehl.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she was a part of the Marian Choir.
Katie had retired from Veeder Root after 19 years as an assembler.
She liked to crochet and enjoyed bowling with the Unter Uns Ladies Sunday Bowlers for 50 years. Katie was one of the first ladies to become a member of the Unter Uns and had been the President Retired Ladies Unter Uns and the Vice-president of the Unter Uns Auxiliary.
Katie enjoyed playing cards while having an ice-cold Coors Light, swiss cheese and pretzels and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Friends will be received from 1-3 pm and 5-7 pm, Thursday, June 5, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be held at 1 pm, Friday, June 6, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, with Fr. Lubomir Strecok, celebrant. Committal will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Altoona.
