Obituary For David M. Vogel

David M. Vogel

Nov. 23, 1953-October 16, 2024

David M. Vogel, 70, Altoona, peacefully passed away Wednesday morning at his residence. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Donald E. and T. Bernice (Anna) Vogel.

He is survived by two daughters, Stacey Weyandt (Larry) and Lindsay Hanlon (Joshua), both of Bellwood and the girl’s mother, Jan L. (Piper) Vogel of Altoona; ten grandchildren: Carly, Aubrey, Presley, Mallory, and Benjamin Weyandt, and Jocelyn, Amelia, Killian, Guinevere, and Nolan Hanlon; and siblings: Robert J. Vogel (Nadine) of Manassas, VA, Nancy A. Vogel, Thomas D. Vogel (Theresa), and Linda M. Mueller (Todd), all of Altoona.

Dave is also survived by the very special love of his life through thick and thin, Marie Zavalanski, with whom he went on vacations, attended concerts and weekend restaurants. She was always by his side at weddings and the birth of all his grandchildren.

Dave was a 1971 graduate of Altoona Area High School and Altoona Vo-Tech.

Dave worked at Neff Electric for 26 years and became a Master Electrician in the city of Altoona. From there, he went to work at Penn State Altoona Campus for 22 years before retiring in 2021 at the age of 67. While working at PSU, he was awarded the Ted J. Long Staff Excellence Award twice.

Dave was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he volunteered to help at the fish fry during Lent, did electrical work when needed and was in charge of hanging the altar curtains.

Dave had a love of the outdoors. He was a former member of the Casey Jones Locomovers Camping Club, life member of the NRA and the Bavarian Aid Society, and a member of the Altoona Volunteer Sportsmen’s Association and Knights of Columbus.

Dave did some fishing but had a passion for archery hunting. He enjoyed his grandkids and attending all their various activities. Sundays with the girls and grandkids was a cherished tradition.

Friends will be received from noon-4 pm on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA. 16602, where a memorial service will immediately follow in the Stevens Memorial Chapel with Fr. James Dugan officiating.

The family suggests that contributions be made in Dave’s memory to: Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601.

Very sorry to hear of Dave's passing. My sympathies go out to all his family and friends. Our audio / visual integration company has done many classroom, venue and special system projects for Penn State Altoona. Dave was involved in a good number of those projects, and he always treated our crews - including myself - with respect and humor. Since I didn't see him all the time, I had trouble telling him apart from his brother. Dave never clarified that for me ... he would just tell me "I'm the good-looking one..." Rest in Peace, Mr. Good-Looking ...

I'm so sorry that my friend has passed. I remembered Dave providing the electric support for entertainers and the food vendors for the many years that the African American Heritage Festival was held at the Penn State Altoona campus (1995 to 2014). He met all of the issues with his wonderful sense of humor and creativity. I was honored and glad to know him and call him my friend.

My sympathy to Dave's family. I met Dave when he worked for Neff Electric & was sub-contracted to work at Nason Hospital. He was such a nice person and we always had nice conversations when we would see each other. May the angels lead him in ✝️. Dave will be in my prayers.

Please accept our sincere condolences for Dave's passing. My parents, Moe & Pauline Weyandt spent fun times camping with Dave & his family with Casey Jones campouts and outings. Dave always greeting me with a smile. May you find comfort in the wonderful memories of him. Prayers for the entire family & friends. Janet (Weyandt) & Bob Nearhood.
