Obituary For David Ross Coy

Major (Retired) David Ross Coy

July 17, 1948-December 11, 2024

Major (Retired) David Ross Coy “The DCoy”, 76, of Flinton, Pa, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Born July 17, 1948 in Indiana, Pa, he was the first son of the late Edgar W. Coy and Thelma I. (Rowe) Ross.

On November 21, 1970, at Graystone Presbyterian Church, Indiana, Pa, he was married to his loving wife, Sharon (Campbell) Coy.

Dave graduated Indiana Area High School in 1966. He continued his education throughout his life by graduating from the University of Central Texas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Princeton Theological Seminary with a Master’s Certificate in Theology and Ministry, and various military schools, including the US Army Command & General Staff College.

He proudly served in the United States military (Air Force then Army) from 1966 to 2008 and is a Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers where he served many assignments throughout the United States and in Germany. He rose to the rank of Major and retired from the Army in 2008.

After Dave retired from the Army, he worked with several engineering firms, the US Army War College, and volunteered his musical singing talents with various churches and the local community. He was a die-hard Steelers fan and also loved the Kansas City Chiefs as long as they weren't playing the Steelers. He was a lifelong biker and fisherman and he loved the outdoors, especially his "Camp David," which he considered his heaven on earth. Besides loving to sing, Dave loved writing, reading, traveling globally, and studying military and presidential history. He was a Civil War re-enactor and collected relics from that time period. Dave was a faithful Christian and lived by the commandment to love one another, always helping others and teaching his family to do the same. Mostly, Dave was the "rock" of his family, beloved husband, supportive dad, loving grandfather and great-grandfather, and dear friend to many. If you knew Dave, you had a friend for life. He will be greatly missed for his perseverance, love of music, kindness, charismatic hospitality, gift to gab, personal embellished stories, and candid jokes.

Dave had been a lifetime member of the VFW of Ebensburg, the American Legion and the Military Officers Association.

Always a soldier, always their hero, Dave is survived and missed by his devoted wife, Sharon; his only daughter and son-in-law, Angel and Eric Stauffer of Virginia; his two beloved grandchildren, Michael Stauffer of Virginia, and TamaLee Stauffer (Darren Laver) of Tennessee; and three great-grandchildren, David Stauffer, Emma Grace Wilson, and Wyndham Laver. He is also survived by his dear brother Brad of Dauphin, PA, as well as many in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

At Dave's request, his visitation will be private, and a public burial will be held with military honors, Wednesday, December 18, 2024, 1:30 pm, at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap Rd, Annville, PA.

Please consider making a memorial contribution in Dave's name to any military organization, such as your local VFW, American Legion, or the VA Hospital in Altoona.

Arrangements are provided by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602.

Oh, Sharon and Angel and all who loved this man, Dave Coy ... please know that I am brokenhearted at the loss of my old "Army buddy." And as I am flooded with happy memories of our time together, I am proud that Dave called me his friend. Whether praying in his car on a cold morning before going into class on the IUP campus or sitting outside the family home watching Angel chase her scruffy little dog "Moses" across the porch and around the house .... that DCoy grin, laughter and big smile would brighten the grayest of days. Hearing Dave belt out a popular song "You Light Up My Life" would make it crystal clear to anyone listening .... this guys is singing praise to God!! May he now dance with the angels. Sending love and prayers to the family. Farewell Mr. Coy. You will be missed. Every day I prayed and sent messages. I never expected a reply. I just wanted you to know how special you were. I still have your voicemail from 2016. You were so proud of me for offering a prayer to our group at Princeton Theological Seminary. Thank you for always uplifting me. Heaven Just got a little sweeter. Be sure to tell my parents hello. I'm sure all of you will be watching over me. Love you always. Rosalind
