Obituary For Donald J. "Don" Porta

Donald J. “Don” Porta August 7, 1942 – March 11, 2023

Donald J. “Don” Porta, 80, of Altoona, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday. Don was born in Altoona, son of the late Paul E. and Adelaide (Luther) Porta. On January 25, 1964, he married Robin L. Young. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years; his children: Beatrice A. Fawks (Richard) and Patricia A. McNally, all of Altoona, James Porta (Sarah) of Concord, OH, Edmund Porta and Lisa M. Henry (Donald) both of Indiana, PA; ten grandchildren: Victoria Way (David), Robin McNally, Roseann McNally, Lindsay Stansberry (Tony), Cody Henry, Dakota Gunsallus (Ma’Riah), Austin Henry, Brandon Gunsallus (Lea), James Porta, and Katelyn Porta; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Connie Burket ; and a brother Richard Porta (Patricia) of Mechanicsburg. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and two brothers: John Porta and Edward Porta. Don was a 1962 graduate of Altoona High School and served in the US Navy. He retired from the Altoona Water Authority as supervisor of the sewer division. In his retirement, he continued to do odd jobs. Don attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, skating, and doing construction jobs. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler and Penn State football fan, but his family was always his priority. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Saint Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, where Don spent much of his time volunteering to serve others.     He was an amazing grandfather as well as a friend. I've always enjoyed visiting him and being able to spend some time with him. He often enjoyed anything construction related, trains, and his religious practices, and I loved listening to his stories as he had plenty to tell. I'll miss him lots, and I'm glad to call him my pappy.

    My dear cousins, my heart is heavy with sadness at Dons passing. My dee condolences and prayers Will never forget the wild rides in the jeep up and down that mountain, and how he would "tom sawyer" us younger cousins into clearing rocks off the housing site! 😊🥰. Sweet memories

    Don always had a smile and a kind word. We shared having 38 first cousins on his Mother's side of the family. Don definitely put his Family first. Many prayers of comfort & good memories to his family, to ease the sorrow. Margie Luther Kline
