Donald L. Detwiler, 83, of Hollidaysburg, peacefully passed away Tuesday at his residence, following a brief battle with glioblastoma.
He was born in Roaring Spring, the son of the late Dale W. and Roxie (Steele) Detwiler.
Don was twice married, first to Lynnea Knavel on August 17, 1963, she preceded him in death on January 9, 2016. He then married, Judith D. (Arthur) Rossman on September 17, 2022.
Surviving Don are his loving wife, Judy; two daughters: Kim Detwiler Van Buren (Jamie) of Wyomissing and Dr. Karen Detwiler Bascom (Rob) of PA Furnace; a stepson, William Rossman (Gina) of Altoona; seven grandchildren: Brenden Van Buren (Michelle), Megan Van Buren, Wyatt Bascom (Paige), Tara Bascom, Alex Anderson, Keynth Rossman and Jake Carson; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Lingenfelter of Martinsburg and Charlotte Clark of Springfield, Missouri. Don’s family was always his highest priority.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Florence Detwiler.
Don grew up in the family business, New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc. and started working there from a young age. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Juniata College in 1964. Don also completed additional studies in computer programming and management at Penn State University.
After graduation from Juniata College, he continued in the family business at New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer. Don retired in 2020 and continued to act as a consultant.
He held several positions in multiple organizations, such as: past president and board member of the American Concrete Pavement Association, past president and executive committee member of the Associated PA Constructors. Don was a former member of Transportation Research Board committee on Concrete Pavement Technology. He had been the treasurer of Juniata College Board of Trustees, having served on Juniata’s President’s Development Council and serving on the Executive Committee. Don was on the board of The Home Nursing Agency, the Blair County Historical Society, and was a member of Altoona Rotarian.
Don was a devoted member of The Well of Blair County, where his faith continued to shape every aspect of his life- professionally and personally; he expressed all of this through his support, deeds and kind actions.
Don had quite an extensive and quiet history of support for many local organizations. In 2005, the Blair County Chamber of Commerce recognized him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. He was known for giving his time and talent to many institutions, such as, Altoona Blair County Development Corporation, American Rescue Workers, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and Easter Seals.
He loved to go skiing, hiking, and playing golf with his friends. Don enjoyed flying in his plane, but he especially looked forward to time away with his family and friends, to their trips to Hilton Head or travelling all over the country and world, creating lasting memories with his loved ones.
Friends will be received from 4-8 pm on Friday, July 10, 2026 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at The Well of Blair County, 605 Burns Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, with Pastor John Godissart.
