Elizabeth Rose (Schamris) Baish, 94, of Altoona has gone to be in the loving arms of our Lord at home with her family, Thursday evening. Elsie was born on Dec. 18, 1929 to her parents, Joseph and Agatha (Pfisterer) Schamris.
She attended St. Mary’s grade school and graduated from Altoona High School in 1948. Elsie then went on to gain her degree as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1951.
On Oct. 18, 1952, she married Frank O. Baish at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1977.
She is survived by daughters Katherine M. Scott of Altoona and Mary Beth Baish-Westin (Toke) of Lilly; seven grandchildren: Suzanne Harrington (Jason) of Mooresville, NC, Frankie Scott (Lisa) of Lilly, Jennifer Moore (Andrew), Todd Scott, Mindy Angello (Marcus) all of Altoona, Sarah Westin (Brandon Maruna) of St. College and Hannah Westin of Bensalem; eight great-grandchildren: Kadyn and Colton Harrington, Lainey and Sadie Jo Scott, Teagan and Landon Moore and Cooper and Kinley Angello.
Elsie was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen E. Charles and a granddaughter, Rose Mae Westin; her siblings: Hilda Stetter, Theresa Strasser, Mary Kutz and Joseph (Sep) Schamris.
Elsie loved spending time with her family at all the holiday gatherings, birthday parties, dance recitals, sporting events, graduations and weddings. She took pride in all her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
For many years Elsie volunteered in the Altoona area, giving TB and flu shots. She had been an active member of the Catholic Nurses Association, Christian Mothers and assisting with different fundraisers at her beloved church, St. Mary’s. Elsie had also been a volunteer for Project Family Care through Mercy Hospital.
Elsie was loved deeply by her family, friends and all those who’ve met her. She will be forever missed.
Elsie’s favorite color was blue, in honor of the Virgin Mary, please feel free to wear that color for her upcoming services.
Friends will be received from 3-7 pm on Monday, May 13, 2024 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, with Fr. Lubomir Strecok, celebrant. Committal will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
