Frank R. “Sonny” Weidlich, Sr.

April 23, 1936-May 18, 2024

Frank R. “Sonny” Weidlich, Sr., 88, of Ebensburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday afternoon after an extended illness. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Francis and Frances (Schmidt) Weidlich.

Beloved husband of Mary Wheeler, sharing 32 loving years of marriage. Devoted father to Robin Snyder (Steve) and Frank R. Weidlich, Jr. (Renee), both through his marriage to Joan Weidlich. Loving grandfather to Steve Snyder, Jr. (Chelsea), Alyssa Janelle Weidlich and Hunter Reid Weidlich. Cherished great-grandfather to Divaya and Rayna Snyder. Devoted brother to Nancy Harker (Lawrence). Caring stepfather to Pam Heverly, Susan Shannon (John DeMaria) and David Shannon. Treasured “cat-dad” to Remy, who adored him.

Frank was preceded in death by brother, Pete Weidlich and stepdaughter, Holly Goss.

A lifelong resident of central Pennsylvania, he graduated from Altoona High School in 1956 and was a proud Army veteran who served his country in Germany from 1958-1960. Upon returning home, he worked at Boyer Candy for 39 years as a proud member of the Bakers and Confectionary Workers Union until his retirement in 2001. Frank dedicated many years to caring for his wife, Mary.

A devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Penn State Nittany Lions, he was also an avid hunter and fisherman, who conveyed his love of nature to those around him. One of his favorite past times was fishing at Lake Rowena. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with frequent trips for pizza and wings at Clark Powell’s Restaurant.

Friends will be received from 4-6 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a funeral service will immediately follow in the Stevens Memorial Chapel by Pastor David Karlberg. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
