George D. Mitchell

May 30, 1942-December 15, 2024

George D. Mitchell, 82, Altoona, passed away Sunday at Homewood at Martinsburg. He was born in Robbins, North Carolina, the son of the late Clara E. “Betty” Mitchell.

He married Barbara A. Houck on August 10, 1968 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on July 15, 2013.

George is survived by his daughter, Amy Mitchell Pierson, M.D. and husband Air Force Master Sergeant Jeremy, currently stationed in Stuttgart, Germany; three granddaughters: Anna, Emma and Islee; two sisters-in-law: Charlene Lancy (Denny) of Altoona and Mary Douds (Don) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and a close cousin, Debbie Morgan of Cockeysville, MD.

He was preceded in death by a close cousin, Larry Puckett.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and retired from the PA Army National Guard. He also retired from Norfolk Southern as an Engineer.

Friends will be received from 2-4 pm on Thursday, December 26, 2024 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2700 Broad Ave., Altoona, PA 16601 with Fr. Mark Begly. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
