Obituary For George Francis Thompson, Jr.

George Francis Thompson, Jr. March 6, 1945-Nov. 23, 2020

George Francis Thompson, Jr., 75, Altoona, formerly of Harrisburg, passed away Monday, at UPMC Altoona following a battle with COVID. George was born in Harrisburg, son of the late George Francis & Mary (Paull) Thompson, Sr. On Sept. 19, 1998, he married Gail L. Myers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Bernie (Laurie) Thompson of Bellevue, WA; daughters, Dr. Sylvia V. (Iyah) Romm of Cape Cod, MA, Barbara R. Thompson of Bellevue, WA, and step-daughter, Tracy (JD) Martin in King George, VA; five grandchildren, Drew & Connor Thompson, Ari & Sebastian Romm and Nathan Falger; his brothers, Richard Thompson of Harrisburg and Edward in Middletown, PA; sisters, Kathy Gabriel of Middletown, PA, Patricia Licadello of Harrisburg, PA and Mary Ellen Ward in Rising Sun, MD. George was a graduate of Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Gannon University of Erie and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Penn State University. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. George had a long career as an Accountant for the Commonwealth of PA retiring in Jan. of 2004 as the head Accountant at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home. He was the Treasurer of the Blair County Democratic Committee, a member of the City of Altoona Planning Commission and a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Blair County. George enjoyed line and ballroom dancing, taking walks with his wife, Gail. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and for the safety of all, there will be no visitation at this time. A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc.     Gail....I am so sorry for your loss. You and George have always been wonderful neighbors to me. I am going to miss seeing the two of you walk by my house everyday. I could always rely on George in a pinch...he was such a nice man and obviously the two of you shared a very special relationship. Rarely did I see one of you without the other. If there's anything I can do for you now in return for all your kindnesses you showed to me, please let me know. Sending you love and prayers for inner peace.

    George was always the one to have a sincere smile on his face and a kind, encouraging word whenever our paths crossed. I loved the joy and happiness he and Gail shared whether they were dancing or attending a civic event. His smile will forever be etched in my memory. Love and hugs to Gail and the rest of the family

    We were so shocked to learn that George had passed. Always enjoyed seeing him and Gail at the Golden Nuggets dance club. Don't think we ever saw him without a smile on his face, and always loved their Halloween outfits! Great sense of humor. George will certainly be missed.
