Obituary For Gregory A. Paratore

Gregory A. Paratore October 9, 1958-December 28, 2023

It is with profound and deepest sorrow, that we announce the passing of Gregory A. Paratore on December 28, 2023, after a brief, but brave battle with cancer.

Born on October 9, 1958 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania he has been preceded in death by his loving parents, Louis A. and Mary Paratore, along with his maternal grandparents, Pasquale and Amelia and his paternal grandparents, Bartolo and Frances.

He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Jan of 34 years and cherished son, Anthony. He also had in the family, Cora Lee, his constant companion and faithful friend. Also surviving, are his loving siblings, Louis (Kelly), Robert (Lori), Andrea (Gordon), and Brian (Stephanie), which he held so close in their relationships, never wavering in their devotion and allegiance to one another. In addition, he had numerous aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews by his side in life.

Starting with his education, Greg graduated from the Greater Johnstown Area Vo-Tech School in 1976, where he then went on to receive his degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management at Penn State Berks Campus in Reading, PA in 1978. Soon afterwards, he began his profession as the General Manager of Beaver Valley Country Club in Beaver Falls, PA while still being in his early 20’s.

Later, he was the service manager at the Top-of-the-Triangle in downtown Pittsburgh followed by several prestigious Stouffer Restaurants in Chicago and along the North Shore as General Manager in the 1980’s. Shortly thereafter, he had spent 30 years as the General Manager of Pike Run Country Club situated in the Laurel Highlands, as the faithful steward of a unique, century-old establishment. His recent position was at the Blairmont Club in Hollidaysburg as General Manager, where he had an abundance of caring and kind members, along with a dedicated and devoted staff that made his successful tenure there always gratifying and pleasurable. Equally important, was his lengthy membership into the CMAA (Club Management Association of America) of the Pittsburgh Chapter since the 1970’s, where he subsequently established many fine and important friendships along the way. His success in life, both personally and in business, ultimately came from a strong and dedicated work ethic.

Greg was known for his deep abiding faith, along with the tenets that he embodied throughout his entire life and the values that were imparted by his parents and grandparents. He also held close the rich Italian traditions of his family that were celebrated and treasured. These traditions were integral to who and what he was. Greg’s shining attributes, though many, were being steadfast and constant in his kindness and thoughtfulness, along with his deep respect for everyone he met, a true testament to the content of his character. Moreover, he had a passion for classic cars, smooth jazz, and was an avid Star Trek fan.

Finally, our family would life to give profound gratitude to “Pittsburgh’s Best” Dr. Costa and Dr. Hrebinko, Jr., to Altoona’s finest Dr. Zhang and the many physicians at UPMC and the Hillman Cancer Center. We’d also like to acknowledge the nurses on the 12th floor, who were the true “foot soldiers” of constant and committed care as well as Dr. Madden, Dr. Patel and Dr. Joseph that were always, always at the ready. We hold your compassion and to all your valiant efforts throughout this difficult and arduous journey with sincere and heartfelt thanks.

For all our family and friends that stood by us, guided us as we navigated this path, your love and support are without equal measure.

Remember my dear and beloved Greg,

NOW, FOREVER AND ALWAYS.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

As a young man, I remember watching all of the Paratore children growing up and visiting our home at Christmas time with "Uncle Lou" and "Aunt Mary." Our parents, Carm and Mary Coco, were great friends and became family with Lou and Mary. Greg was a great guy and he will be missed greatly. So sorry to hear of his premature passing. Greg was a shining light at Pike Run Country Club, and steered the ship well through many tough years. But staying so very long must have taken a toll on him. He was exyremely hard-working, kind to everyone and made every member feel "special". Greg used to tease me about how my father, a winter resident of Florida, would call him before comimg north every spring and ask "Who died Greg?". I hope they are now meeting up and chuckling again about that and the fragility of life and death.

Please accept my caring thoughts and condolence Jan and Anthony. I will forever love my memories of tearing around our neighborhood with Greg and his siblings. Our gang loud and boisterous as we played yard baseball, football, basketball in our alley and night games of Kick the Can and Capture the flag! Greg was always smiling-ALWAYS. He was such a good guy to everyone. It sounds like he took his kindness and stable attributes into his adult years and his stellar career. Rest now Greg in peace and soar with eagles and angles. Louis, Robert, Andrea and Brian know that you are in my prayers and I send my love.

From kindergarten days through grade 8 at OMOS school, Greg was always a dear pal & close classmate. As the two shortest in the class, we were seated together, lined up together, and thus really well acquainted. Now I know he is also a Trekkie, we have that in common too. Truly one of the good ones. May his soul soar with the angels, and may the entire Paratore family find peace in the knowing he is surely in the hands of God.💙😔🙏🏼

He took a chance on me and for that, I have always been grateful. As a recent college grad, Greg hired me as the Banquet Manager at James Tavern in Northbrook, IL. From there, a decades-long mentorship and friendship grew. Even after moving back to PA, he was always willing to guide me with career and family decisions. I will miss our catch-up phone calls, his humor and his genuine concern for the wellbeing of me and my kids whenever times were good or times were bad. I send my heartfelt condolences to Jan, Anthony and the all of the Paratore family. May he Rest In Peace.

Lots of great memories growing up with the Paratores and in particular, Greg. A bunch of crazy kids doing crazy kid stuff. Greg was often the "voice of reason" saying "...wow, I don't know guys?" The adult me now appreciates the trouble he probably kept us out of. Thanks for the memories Greg! My sincere condolences to Jan and Anthony and the entire Paratore family.
