Obituary For Hilda Marie Gordon

Hilda Marie Gordon July 29,1929 – January 2,2022

Hilda Marie Gordon, 92, formerly of Altoona, died Sunday at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, following a brief illness. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Rudolf and Anna (Schneider) Vorndran. She married Glenn B. Gordon on July 22, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Altoona. She is survived by 3 sons: James (Lois) Gordon and John (Shelley) Gordon, both of Altoona and Stanley (Yvonne) Gordon of Johnstown; 3 daughters: Joyce (Dave) Paul of East Freedom, Sandra (Thomas) Hughes of Duncansville, and Deborah (Guy) Parrish of Dysart; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Gordon. Hilda is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 11 great, great grandchildren; brother Thomas (Lisa) Vorndran of Texas and sisters Pauline Marzo, Catherine Vorndran and Christine Betar all of Altoona; and numerous nieces and nephews. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband Glenn on July 23, 2015, her son Dennis on September 13, 2021, brothers John and Rudolph Vorndran, a sister Helen Odrechowski, a grandson Jeffrey Sunderland and a great grandson Thomas Gvozd.

Hilda graduated from Altoona H.S., was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church Altoona where she was a Girl Scout troop leader. She was a member of the Bavarian Aid Society where she was a waitress for many years, was the first female member of the club and was secretary for many of the bowling leagues for many years. She was also a member of the Unter Uns Society. She enjoyed bowling, playing board games and cards, doing jigsaw puzzles, spending time with her family where she considered all the children and grandchildren’s spouses to be her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed her time at Garvey Manor, especially playing bingo there. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Garvey Manor Nursing Home or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church Altoona, in memory of Hilda.

Friends will be received from 4-8 pm Tuesday January 4, 2022 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc 1421 8th Ave. Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A Funeral Mass for Hilda will be celebrated at 10 am Wednesday January 5, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Altoona by Fr. Lubomir Strecok. Committal will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

    Hi mommom! I'm just sitting here thinking of you and pappap and my dad! I miss you all so much. I will never forget dancing with you at the Bavarian, many Polka dances.     Hilda & Glenn were always so NICE - may they now enjoy eternity together. My sympathies to their family, especially Jim who made the SMS Dutchman's football teams mighty tough & proud.
