Howard Hugh “Buss” Garver, Jr. May 16, 1927-March 31, 2023
Howard Hugh “Buss” Garver, Jr., 95, Altoona, passed away Friday morning at his residence. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Howard H. and Marian L. (Porte) Garver. In June of 1952, he married a wonderful young woman he met, Helen Evey of Altoona and they had been married for 67 years at the time of her passing in May of 2020. Hugh is survived by three children: Betsy Ann Mayhue (David) of Elizabethtown, Mark Evey Garver and Linda Susan Reilly (Hugh) both of Altoona; five wonderful grandchildren: Rachel Yorgy (Brad), Brandi Snowberger (Rob), Kris Mayhue (Erin), Josh Mayhue (Michaela) and Brianne Mayhue; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert and Don Garver and his sister, Helen. Hugh was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School, a 1952 graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering and a master’s degree in 1953. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Germany. Retired as an Associate Professor of Engineering from Penn State Altoona in 1987. He continued to do consulting until 79 years of age. Previously he was an engineer at Hunter and Campbell and worked for the Martin Co. in Baltimore, MD. He was a member at Fairview United Methodist Church where he served on numerous committees. Hugh traveled widely with his wife in the United States and abroad. He also enjoyed building models, collecting paintings of aircraft, was a model train enthusiast and loved to read. Friends will be received from 10 am-noon on Monday, April 3, 2023 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602. A funeral service will follow at noon in the Stevens Memorial Chapel with Susan Gingery officiating. Interment will be held at Alto Reste Park.
