Obituary For Irene Y. DeBernardis

Irene Y. DeBernardis Dec. 23, 1929 – Jan. 19, 2021 Irene Y. DeBernardis, 91, formerly of Altoona, passed away peacefully at Garvey Manor. The Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm and the Staff of Garvey Manor have been a true blessing taking care of Irene over the past year. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late James and Ida (Ferramini) Catina. On September 8, 1949, she married Benedict A. DeBernardis at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Altoona. He preceded her in death May 31, 2008. She is survived by a son, Thomas J. (Michele) of Altoona; two daughters: Deborah C. Locke (David B.) and Cynthia M. Sharbaugh (Michael P.), both of Altoona; eight grandchildren: Nicole (Ross) Dixon, Justin (Alyssa) Locke, Rachel (Matthew) Stoehr, Alicia DeBernardis, Christopher (Katie) DeBernardis, Scott DeBernardis, Travis Sharbaugh, and Troy (Julie) Sharbaugh; two step-grandchildren: Chelsey Huber and Greg Huber; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchild; a sister, Christine DelCoco of Md; and three sisters-in-laws: Anna DeBernardis, Betty DeBernardis and Sylvia DiNardo. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Rosemarie DiFlaviano and Christine DelCoco; also, an infant sister, Mary Catina. Irene was a 1949 graduate of Altoona High School. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Altoona. Irene was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she absolutely loved spending time with her children grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed baking, shopping and particularly liked her holiday decorations. At the request of the departed there will be no visitation. A funeral Mass will be celebrated with Fr. Lubomir Strecok at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 511 20th St., Altoona, Pa. 16602 at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22, 2021. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family requests that donations, in memory of Irene, be made to The Angel Fund at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 511 20th St, Altoona, PA 16602 OR by recognizing the Carmelite Sisters at Garvey Manor, 1037 S. Logan Blvd., Hollidaysburg, Pa. 16648. Arrangements are by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.     Debbie, Tom, and Cindy I was sad to read that you beautiful mother passed. I found comfort knowing she is with your father reuniting their love for one another.     So sorry for your loss! I did Irenes hair when she lived at The Lutheran Home very sweet lady! She loved my dog because he is a Shih Tzu and she told me she had one! Then I went to visit my cousin at Garvey and saw her there so took my dog to visit her there !! She will be miss !
