Obituary For Jack L. Schmittle

Jack L. Schmittle July 25, 1943-April 3, 2024

Jack L. Schmittle, 80, of Altoona, passed away Wednesday at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Herman and Zelma (Briggs) Schmittle.

Jack married Carol A. Conte on Nov. 7, 1970 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years; sisters-in-law: Fran Balestino and Susan Monroe (Jim); brothers-in-law: John Conte (Mary), Louis Conte, Richard Conte (Sharon) and Bobby Conte (Donna); several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

Jack was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law: Anthony Conte and his wife Joan and Jim Balestino.

He was a graduate of Altoona High School and attended Penn State University. Jack joined the PA Army National Guard and retired as a Sergeant with 6 years of service. He retired from Bell of PA as a switching equipment technician with 29 years of service.

Jack was a member at Altoona Bible Church.

He was a member of the Communication Workers of America local 13031, a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Loyal Order of the Moose, the Caesar Battisti, American Legion Iaia Post and the Executive Board of the Blair/Bedford Central Labor Council.

Friends will be received from 10 am-noon, Monday, April 8, 2024 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a funeral service will be held immediately following in the Stevens Memorial Chapel by Pastor Stewart W. McClelland. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

    Dear Carol, We were so sad to hear that Jack passed away! You have our heartfelt sympathy for your loss. I enjoyed seeing and talking to Jack, he was such a kind soul. We are in South Carolina until late April or we would be there to see you. We will be remembering you and Jack in our prayers and thoughts in the coming days. We are so sorry for you loss.
