Obituary For James "Jim" D. Garlena

James D. Garlena

October 20, 1965-October 15, 2024

James D. Garlena, 58, Altoona, passed away Tuesday afternoon at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Leo F. and Madelyn L. (Socey) Garlena.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Alexandria Garlena of Frederick, Maryland; his brother, Joseph Garlena (Sharon) of York Haven and his sister, Kathleen Surma (Thomas) of Duncansville; his former wife, Sharon Garlena of Frederick, Maryland a sister-in-law, Lisa Garlena of Duncansville and several nieces.

He was preceded in death by his son, Nikolai Garlena and a brother, Christopher Garlena.

Jim was a 1983 graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School and went on to serve his country as a U.S. Marine, where he was honorably discharged. After his service he went on to become a Registered Nurse.

He loved watching Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football.

Unfortunately, Jim struggled with alcoholism a great deal of his life, which overshadowed the man he truly was. Those of us who knew and loved Jim will remember a proud Marine, who was kind, generous and quick witted with a great sense of humor. But, above all else, a man who truly loved his family and friends.

There will be no visitation or services.

Arrangements are provided by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602.

The family asks that contributions be made in Jim’s memory to: Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516/ www.support.woundedwarriorproject.org.

Condolences may be made at www.stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook.

Growing up, there was no where else that I spent more time than at your house. You and your brother were two of my closest friends and your Mom and Dad were always welcoming. (Well your Mom always was, your Dad was hit or miss.) Whether it was playing football, swimming next door, playing pool or ping-pong, hiking in the woods, Cub Scouts, or playing cops and robbers we always found something to keep us out of trouble. Usually I was with your brother when I didn't (stay out of trouble that is) but at least we never seemed to get caught. Although those memories seem so long ago they are still near to my heart. You will be greatly missed my friend.

I was saddened to see Jim's obituary today. He always had a kind word and hand shake for me at the VA hospital. I appreciated his input in a group I facilitate and I will miss seeing him. Rest in peace, Jim.
