Janis M. (Moyer) Powell Kinney

December 26, 1935-May 9, 2025

Janis M. “Jan” Kinney, 89, of Altoona, passed away Friday afternoon at UPMC Altoona surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Cresson, the daughter of the late Cecil and Ruth (Moyer) Powell.

Jan married James L. Kinney on May 3, 1957 at Holy Name Catholic Church, Ebensburg.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years; her loving daughter, Janis Abram of Altoona; five grandchildren: Cory Abram, Cole Abram (Amy), Heather Sprouse (Mark), Connor Abram (Melissa) and Jenna Koelle (Brett); and nine great-grandsons and one on the way and a loving brother Bill Powell (Beverly ) of East Berlin.

Jan was a graduate of Cambria High School, Clarion University and received her master’s degree from Penn State University.

She retired as a high school librarian from the Hollidaysburg Area School District with 35 years’ service along with being a professional storyteller for many years.

Jan was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.

She was a member of the National Storytelling Association, a storyteller for Southern Allegheny Museum of Art and had done numerous workshops all across the United States. Jan was a rostered artist in storytelling on the PA Council of the Arts and was a published author.

Jan enjoyed playing the flute, reading, wood burning, drawing and going for bike rides. She especially loved spending time with her family.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm on Thursday May 15, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 pm Friday May 16, 2025 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 301 Spruce St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648 with Fr. Alan Thomas. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

    As a former teacher at the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School, I will remember Jan as a friend and colleague who was always willing to assist students and staff in any way she could with a friendly smile.
