Our dear mother, Jean Theresa Hughes, 97, peacefully entered eternal life at her daughter’s home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on Saturday, December 28, 2024. She was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on June 7, 1927, the daughter of the late Christopher and Christine (Hotter) Glasson. On June 14, 1952, Jean married her beloved husband, Francis P. Hughes, to whom she was married for 68 years. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Francis.
She is survived by six children: Thomas (Kathleen) Hughes of Altoona, Barbara (Charles) Hardt of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, James (Kathleen) Hughes of Altoona, Joseph (Shari) Hughes of Altoona, Francis (Peggy) Hughes of Altoona, and Jeanne (Victor) Villano of Hot Springs, Arkansas; eleven grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.
Jean graduated from Altoona Catholic High School in 1945. After high school, she worked at Boyer Candy and later operated the telephone switchboard at Bell Telephone until she married Frank. Jean was a kind and loving wife, as well as an exceptional mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Grandchildren and pets were the light of her life. She enjoyed bowling, shopping for clothes and shoes, gardening, cooking, sitting in the sun, visiting the beach, and was an avid fan of Penn State football and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Jean touched the lives of many with her gentle spirit. She was a devoted Catholic and a long-time member of Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
Friends will be received from 8:30-9:30 am on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where a funeral Mass will immediately follow at 9:30 am. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Jean’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-3678.
