Obituary For Joan C. Maier

Joan C. Maier

July 15, 1938-July 16, 2025

Joan C. Maier, 87, of Altoona, passed away Wednesday morning at her residence. She was born in Gallitzin, the daughter of the late John W. and Cecelia (DeCoskey) Karcz.

Joan married Carl F. “Moonie” Maier on August 31, 1957.

She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years; three sons: Carl F. Maier, Jr. (Karan) of Texas, John J. Maier of Florida and Christopher A. Maier of Altoona; two daughters: Corinne A. Baker (John) of Altoona and Joanie M. Hoover (Terry) of Shermans Dale; twelve grandchildren: Joseph, Kevin, Jeremy, Carla, Jeff, Tiffany, Sarah, Michael, Christine, Adam, Alexa and Alaina; thirteen great-grandchildren and two sisters: Barbara Ann Lauer of Altoona and Cecelia Bradshaw of Columbia, SC.

Joan was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

She was a 1956 graduate of Mount Aloysius High School.

Joan worked for various places as a seamstress, including, Puritan, Gables, Madd John and Shirt Factory in Gallitzin.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Joan enjoyed bowling, bingo, casinos, sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlework and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Friends will be received from 2-5 pm on Sunday, July 20, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, July 21, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1405 5th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602, with Fr. Lubomir Strecok, celebrant.

Committal will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Altoona.
