John E. Barr

November 23, 1945-January 7, 2025

John E. Barr, 79, Duncansville, passed away Tuesday at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, the son of the late Walter I. and Florine (Conrad) Barr, Sr. John married Antonia D. DelBiondo on January 27, 1968.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years; his son John C. Barr and daughter, Lori Craine (Anthony) both of Altoona; two grandchildren: Ayden Craine and Jonathan Barr; his four siblings: Frank “Snook” Barr and Tom Barr (Joan) both of Altoona, and Arnie Barr (Cindy) and Mary Ingham (Al) both of Dysart; many nieces and nephews; his sister-in-law, Marsha Barr; brother-in-law, Junior Mauro and long-time friend, Al Davis.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Walter I. Barr, Jr. and Ricky Barr; and sister, Virginia Mauro.

John was a 1963 graduate of Altoona High School and served in the Army National Guard.

He retired from Norfolk Southern as a Mechanical Supervisor. He previously was the owner of Barr’s Arco from 1969-1982 and also worked as a mechanic for many years.

John was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.

He liked hunting and fishing, and in his younger days he enjoyed body building, playing flag football and snowmobiling. Most especially he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Friends will be received from 1-5 pm, Sunday, January 12, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil will be held.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Monday, January 13, 2025 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Ave., Altoona, PA 16601 with Fr. James Dugan, celebrant. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
