June 5, 1930 – May 30, 2022
John M. Gildea, 91, Altoona, passed away Monday at his residence, following an extended illness.
John was born in Hollidaysburg, son of the late Irene Tolston. On June 28, 1958, he married Dorothy F. Riley.
He is survived by his loving wife; two sons: Donald M. Gildea and wife Deborah of Altoona and Andrew F. Gildea and wife Terri of Epherata; two daughters: Susan I. Straw and husband Robert of Altoona and Kimberly A. DeVecchis and husband Steve of Hollidaysburg; eight grandchildren: Andrew, Dylan, Shannon, Jennifer, John, Riley, Vincent, and Dominick; a great-granddaughter, Haley, and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Straw; a brother, Robert Mutzabaugh; and a sister, Mona Lee Evans.
John was a 1948 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and was a US Army Veteran of Korea.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
John retired in maintenance for Family and Children’s Services and previously worked at A&P and Crane Company.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing with his sons, sons-in-law, brother-in-law Don, and the Ciaverella brothers. He especially enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada. John was also an avid fan of Pitt and Pittsburgh Steeler football and Pittsburgh Pirate baseball.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, June 2, 2022 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602 where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2022 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church by Fr. James Dugan. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
