Obituary For Margaret ("Ticky") L. Hendricks

Margaret L. (“Ticky”) Hendricks

June 19, 1936-January 24, 2024

Margaret L. (“Ticky”) Hendricks born on June 19, 1936, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Ticky was a nickname given to her as a child by her sister Mary Ann from a beloved bedtime story. Ticky was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Dr. Charles and Marguerite Hendricks. Ticky lived from childhood through her adult life at 404 E Wopsononock Road in Altoona where she would proudly and brilliantly decorate her house for the Christmas holidays. Ticky attended Chatham College for two years and graduated from Allegheny College in 1958 with a BA in Theatre Arts. Post-graduation, Ticky obtained permanent certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction.

Ticky had an extremely active life and many careers including schoolteacher, real estate agent, and a variety of sales and public relations positions. One of her favorite roles was working on and off as Sales Representative/Media Consultant with her mentor, Rod Wolf at WRTA, where she was the top selling representative in the Altoona-Blair County market. All told, Ticky spent 20 years in the radio industry working in all phases of the business. At one point she was one of only two women Program Directors in the country. Later in life, she returned to her background in education as a member of the Altoona School Board, where she served for five terms ending in 2011.

Ticky’s greatest pleasure in life came from her many dogs. She especially loved Bichons, Westies, and Goldens and is survived by Connor, McGregor and Amber. Ticky turned her love of dogs into one of her many careers as the long-time owner/operator of Pet Nannies. Many Altoona area families can be counted among her clients.

Ticky was very active in the arts in a variety of positions including as a Vice President and board member of Altoona Community Theater (ACT), Vice President and member of the executive board of the Blair County Arts Foundation and chairman of the Mishler Committee during the 75th Anniversary Jubilee. Ticky directed many shows at the Mishler for ACT including Kismet, Barefoot in the Park, Anything Goes, Plaza Suite, Mousetrap and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

She is pre-deceased by her older sister, Mary Ann Bloom, whom she loved dearly, idolized, and often copied, and her brother-in-law, Lawrence Bloom. Ticky is survived by her nephew, Mark Bloom married to Jill Barlow Bloom, and her niece, Julie Bloom Citron married to David Citron, as well as 4 grand nieces and nephews: Kyle Bloom, Lindsey Bloom, Samantha Citron and Charlie Citron.

There will be a visitation on Sunday, January 28, 2024 from 11:30AM – 1PM at The Stevens Mortuary, 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602 followed by a 1 PM funeral service in the Stevens Memorial Chapel with Rev. Janie McElwee-Smith. Interment will be held at Alto-Reste Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Altoona Community Theater, 1213 12th St, Altoona, PA 16601 or Mending Hearts Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 97, Hollidaysburg, Pa. 16648.

My dad, Brian Weller, is a high school friend of Ticky's, so I'd grown up knowing about her (and probably met her once or twice during visits to Altoona to see our grandmother). But it wasn't until a more recent (2019) visit to Altoona and Hollidaysburg with my dad that I got to meet and appreciate Ticky as an adult. Ticky is one of those larger-than-life people for whom I have deepening respect. She was not only upfront, but kind, loving, and full of embrace for people and animals. But as I reflect on her life, I think of the extent to which she had to carve out her own path, as an unmarried woman of her time. That can be a daunting reality for many, but Ticky seems to have come away from it with an ever-expansive welcoming embrace of others and of life, and I really admire that and am grateful I got to spend time with her....and that smile! 🙂 It makes me smile to think that Ticky and my mom are putting on performances together at the great dog park in the sky. She is one of a kind. Vibrant, playful, vivacious and loving. A long time AHS friend. Brian Weller

I was Ticky's Production Manager for the musicals she directed for Altoona Community Theatre. I'll never forget all the wonderful times we spent in rehearsals. Then during the shows I would stand with Ticky in the back of the Mishler and we would watch the shows. When the audience applauded I would always turn to Ticky and see how much it meant to her after all her hard work. That was a wonderful time with ACT. Unfortunately I am out of town and unable to be at her memorial service but I will always treasure the memories. Ellen Paterson

Ticking was our neighbor for about ten years. When she was no longer able to maintain her cottage, I visited here in her assisted living room. Knowing she loved dark chocolate, I always made sure I had a bar to share in my pocket. Ticki adored her dogs and missed them terribly when she had to find them new homes. However, no matter how she was feeling, you were always welcome in Ticki's home regardless where it was. Because, I fractured my foot this week, I will not be able to say goodbye to my dear friend. But, she will be missed. Our weekly visits will be treasured.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Ticky's passing. We became close friends when Ticky served on the Altoona Area School Board and we made countless trips to East Wopsy Avenue from 2002-2014 so our beloved Shelties, Rusty and Pokey, could be masterfully cared for by Aunt Ticky at Camp Pet Nanny. Both of our boys got highly-excited for each visit. We are certain our dogs joined hundreds of their fellow campers at the Rainbow Bridge on Wednesday to welcome Ticky. We're sure she handed out "cocktail treats" for all of the campers! Tom and Lisa Bradley Emmaus, PA
