Marie (Mattiello) Tremel
October 31, 1930-January 21, 2025
Marie (Mattiello) Tremel, 94, Altoona, passed away Tuesday at her daughter’s residence. She was born in Lilly, the daughter of the late Aniello and Marie (Madaio) Mattiello.
Marie married William L. Tremel on October 22, 1950 at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, Lilly. He preceded her in death on December 22, 2013.
Surviving Marie is her daughter, Catherine Ferrero and her husband, Joseph of Cheswick; also, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her brothers: Anthony, Dominic, Fr. Lucian, John and Carmine Mattiello; her sisters: Marion Destefano, Christine Eckenrode, Elizabeth Mattiello, Lucille George, Sister Mary Louis, Rose Marie Sanders and infant, Dorothy.
She was a 1948 graduate of Lilly High School.
Marie was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church where she worked on many summer bazaars.
She resided in several states with her husband, Bill, where he played professional baseball with the Chicago Cubs organization, both in the minor and the major leagues. However, Lilly, PA was always her home and they settled close-by in Altoona setting up their new home.
Marie was employed by the William F. Gable Co. in notions, handbags and the cosmetics departments and later for Thrift Drug Co. She was an active Girl Scouts of America leader for many years, both in Lilly and Altoona. Marie enjoyed reading and playing computer games.
She was very fond of her grand dogs: Cactus, Cheyenne, Cimarron and Canyon.
Friends will be received from 2-6 pm, Sunday, January 26, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Monday, January 27, 2025 at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, with Fr. Brian Norris, celebrant.
Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
