Mary Beth (Musser) Flickinger

June 10, 1922-May 19, 2023

Mary Beth (Musser) Flickinger, 100, Altoona, formerly of Baptist Homes, Mt. Lebanon, passed away Friday at Maybrook Hills.

She was born in Altoona, the daughter of the late Walter and Ama (Shover) Musser and her late stepfather, whom she was raised by, William Roles. Mary Beth married Earl D. Flickinger on June 14, 1947. He preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1968.

Mary Beth is survived by her son, Lorin Flickinger (Susan) of Pittsburgh and her daughter, Maureen Verzella of Altoona; five grandchildren: Robert and Andrew, Cheryl, Melissa and Cory; nine-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Thomas Verzella and brothers: William and Donald Musser.

Mary Beth was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School.

She was an executive secretary for Sylvania for several years and later worked at the Pittsburgh Fence Company until her retirement.

Mary Beth was a faithful member of Castle Shannon United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

Her love of classical music was evident as she attended the Pittsburgh and Altoona Symphony Concerts for over 40 years. Mary Beth was a featured guest harmonica soloist for the Altoona Symphony at the age of 95, under the direction of Teresa Cheung.

She was a former resident of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Home for over 30 years. Mary Beth was currently residing at Maybrook Hills in Altoona. She delighted patients, staff, family and friends with her musical talent on the harmonica and her impromptu performances.

Mary Beth will always be remembered for her smile, her love of music, her “open door” at her home and her genuine love and devotion of Christ.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Wehnwood United Methodist Church.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Baptist Homes in Mt. Lebanon and Maybrook Hills for their loving care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Altoona Symphony Orchestra, 1331 12th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16601 in Mary Beth’s memory.

I recall all the Facebook posts of Mary Beth, sharing, in her senior years, her talents and her impressive stamina. She was truly an inspiration! As I viewed her on videos, I was thankful for Facebook, because of its allowing us to see Mary Beth, with her warm and gentle smile, continuing to share her talents, even up to the age of 100 years! This triggered my mind into thinking of the talents that her daughter, Maureen has in music, and it made me realize how close this mother and daughter's relationship was, and how a part of Mary Beth will always live on through her daughter, Mareen!
