Mary G. Shade

April 28, 1931 – December 2, 2023

Mary G. Shade, 92, formerly of Altoona, passed away peacefully Saturday at Pennknoll Village, Everett, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born in Ashville, daughter of the late Felix and Agnes “Goldie” (Gauntner) Dougherty. On January 4, 1953 she married Ronald N. Shade who preceded her in death on April 14, 1967.

Surviving is a daughter, Dana J. Shade (Janice Penrod) of Bedford; four grandchildren: Hillary Gadalla (Karim), Emily Shade (Stephanie Cataldo), Joshua Penrod (Kelly), and Zachary Penrod (Sara); three great-grandchildren: Ethan Howell, Charlie Penrod, and Tessa Penrod; a brother, Tom Dougherty of NY; and special nieces: Jane Gray and Judy Waters.

She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Shade; sisters: Anne Marie Blott, Rose Purdy, Rita Dougherty, Theresa Kennedy, Ruth Pasquino, Joan Broadrick, and Norma Clapper; brothers: John Dougherty, Felix Dougherty, and Joe Dougherty.

Mary retired from the Presbyterian Home at Hollidaysburg after 25 years of service and was a volunteer for UPMC Altoona for many years.

She was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

Mary enjoyed working on puzzles, reading, coloring and spending time with her family.

Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m., Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602 where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 7, 2023 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament with Msgr. Stanley Carson, Celebrant. Committal will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Mary’s memory to: Central PA Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602.
