Obituary For Mary Regina "Jean" (Schachtner) Wohlbruck

Mary Regina “Jean” (Schachtner) Wohlbruck

April 3, 1926-May 30, 2026

Mary Regina "Jean" (Schachtner) Wohlbruck, recently of State College and formerly from Altoona, passed away peacefully on Saturday. She was surrounded by close family members, accompanied by the music of Frank Sinatra, one of her favorite entertainers.

Born on April 3, 1926 in Altoona, Jean was the daughter of Francis and Florence (Watson) Schachtner. She was the oldest of 9 children, all of whom preceded her in death. Jean was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Charles W. McLaughlin, and numerous other family members.

She was a 1944 graduate of Altoona Area High School and upon graduation, immediately entered the workforce at the railroad. On August 17, 1946, she married Paul Wohlbruck and they soon welcomed their only daughter Melody, whom Jean cherished and adored until her last moments.

Jean was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church and also a member of Park Hills Country Club.

Jean later worked and retired as the Office Manager at United Food and Commercial Workers Union, after many years of service. Following retirement, she cared for several children, a role that kept her active and helped preserve her youthful spirit.

An avid golfer and card player, Jean also enjoyed spending time in Florida throughout her life. She was admired for her quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and timeless beauty. Rarely seen without a stylish pair of sunglasses, Jean carried herself with confidence and grace. Fiercely independent and determined, she remained strong and self-reliant well into her nineties. One of her greatest goals was to reach her 100th birthday—a milestone she proudly achieved. She witnessed a century of change, adored her family and friendships and she loved to talk about it all.

The birth of her grandson, Andy, brought Jean immense joy and pride; he was one of the loves of her life, only second to her daughter.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Melody A. McLaughlin of State College; her grandson, Andrew C. McLaughlin, his wife, Tami, and their children Tate, Jack, Casher and Miley, all of State College. Additionally, she is survived by Katie Belis-Lowry and her husband, Scott, of Johnstown, along with their children, Max Belis, and Trace and Quinn Lowry; her goddaughter, Gina Lawruk of Altoona; and Gina's daughter, Jordan. Affectionately known as "Ba," a nickname lovingly given to her by her grandson, Jean embraced the title entirely. Over the years, she became "Ba" not only to her family, but to many others whose lives she touched.

In accordance with Jean's wishes, no memorial services will be held.
