Obituary For Michael "Mouse" J. Malligan

Michael J. “Mouse” Malligan

September 16, 1946-July 13, 2026

Michael J. “Mouse” Malligan, 79, of Altoona, passed away unexpectedly on Monday at home with his wife by his side.

Born and raised in Altoona, Mike graduated from Bishop Guilfoyle High School, class of 1964 before going on to work at Penn State University for 35 years.

On June 30, 1979, he married the former Mary McCreery in Altoona. Together they shared 47 years of marriage, and Mike often said Mary was not only his wife but his best friend. He loved her, his children, and his grandchildren more than anything in the world.

Mike was a devoted fan of Penn State and Pittsburgh sports, and never missed a chance to follow local teams. But his greatest mark on the community came through coaching — a passion he picked up as early as age 19 and carried through all his children's playing years. Over the decades he coached parochial league basketball at McNelis and St. Mary's, Federation baseball, and more than 15 years of Little League baseball, touching the lives of countless young athletes along the way.

He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Malligan; his three sons, Todd (Gina), Michael (Megan), and David; his sister, Donelly Steinbeiser (Fred); and his grandchildren, Addison, Molly, Ryan, Michael, Lincoln and Maura.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. Malligan and Ethel (Cheers) Malligan.

Husband, father, grandfather and coach — Mike was beloved by many people and will be remembered for the love and dedication he poured into everyone around him.

Friends will be received from 4-7 pm, Thursday, July 16, 2026 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Friday, July 17, 2026 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601 with Fr. James Dugan, celebrant.

Committal will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery, Hollidaysburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mike’s memory to: Altoona Area Baseball Association, 910 Pleasant Valley Blvd, Altoona, PA 16602.

Thinking of the entire Malligan family during this incredibly difficult time. While I never had the privilege of meeting Michael, I have pleasure of knowing some of his children and grandchildren. They are caring, kind, strong, and wonderful people, and that tells me everything I need to know about the man he was. Wishing you all comfort, strength, and peace as you celebrate his life and cherish the many memories you shared.

Mary And Family , Please Except My Condolences. As A Player / Athlete Under Coach Mike I Shall Forever Be So Grateful To ( Mouse) For His Guidance And Leadership In Making Me A Better Basketball Player. I Ask Myself As You All Must Do WHY? That Answer Just Does Not Come. Maybe God Needed Him. The Void That's Left Will Take Sometime. My Blessing's And Love Go Out To All Of You. Sincerly. Steven A. Shannon & Family.
