Obituary For Paul E. Renyck

Paul E. Renyck Sept. 2, 1932 – Oct. 18, 2020

On October 18th, 2020, Paul (“Goose”) Eugene Renyck passed away quietly at the Veteran’s Home in Hollidaysburg, PA. He was 88 years old. Goose was one of two children born to Gustav Charles and Rose Catherine (Bowmaster) Renyck and on September 2, 1932 in Altoona, PA. Goose attended Catholic school in Altoona prior to enlisting in the United States Navy in the early 1950’s. He was a seaman aboard the destroyer, USS Warrington (DD 843) where he was a ship’s welder and rescue swimmer. Goose was proud of his service as a “Tin Can Sailor,” and he enthusiastically shared with us many stories of his time at sea. Some of his most memorable sea stories included receiving his Shellback certificate after crossing the equator for the first time and participating in the traditional Line Crossing Ceremony. He also tested new survival gear in the frigid waters of the Southern (Antarctic) Ocean, and received formal recognition for attempting a water rescue of a man overboard during high seas. He especially enjoyed sailing north along the St. Lawrence River in Canada as well as the tropical waters of the Caribbean. Goose was honorably discharged from the Navy and returned home to assist his mother after his father’s untimely death. After military service, Goose worked for Automotive Supply of Altoona for 20 years, always speaking fondly of the company and the skills he acquired which allowed him to keep his first motorcycle in perfect operating condition. He finally retired after driving trucks for Drenning Inc. of Altoona for 20 years to deliver for Meals on Wheels. Goose absolutely loved his Meals on Wheels clients and went out of his way to let them know that they were not alone. Goose was an avid reader of history and fictional westerns. He was a fan of classical Hollywood films and was a fabulous polka dancer. He was handsome too! Some remarked that he looked like “Kojak.” Suffice it to say that he must have been a real charmer, for he was married three times. He had three children with his third wife, Jacqueline Aungst. P.J., Heather, and Chad will sorely miss him. We all have fond memories of family time he regularly provided to us at the Brush Mountain Sportsman Club - enjoying adult beverages with his friends, playing rounds of horse shoes, cooking pork chops on an open fire, swimming, and dancing. Heather will miss his stories, his sense of humor, and hearing him lament about the tragedy that is the 45th presidency. He will be missed by all, as he was a jovial and generous companion. Goose made it clear to his children that the employees of the Hollidaysburg Veteran’s Home were a special part of his life for the level of physical and emotional care that they gave. They became part of his family, and his children will be forever thankful to them for making him feel that way. He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sister, Jacqueline Jo. He is survived by his three children and their spouses/partners, Chad & Sue Renyck, Heather Renyck & Jim Bromley, and P.J. Renyck & Rob Brown; the mother of his children Jacqueline Aungst; dear nephews and nieces, Mike Iacovella, Marianne Iacovella, & Ivanna Iacovella; 4 grandchildren Lacia Renyck, Brooke Wagner, Andrew Renyck, & Marah Vaughn; and 4 great grandchildren, Zachary, Zane and Zoe Sharp & Layla Renyck. Due to the current health pandemic, a celebration of life will occur at a later date. A private, Catholic Rite of Committal will be held graveside with immediate family members. In lieu of flowers, it was Goose’s wish that people remember him by donating (if not a hardship) to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to The Disabled Veterans of America. If you are a Catholic, he would appreciate having a mass said for him at your church. Arrangements are made by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc. Condolences may be made at stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook.
