Paul Edward Nuss, Sr., 79, of Martinsburg, PA, passed away Sunday, at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Pittsburgh, the son of the late Maynard “Mundy” and Helen (Kohler) Nuss, and grew up in Patton, PA.

He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Garson and brother Maynard Nuss, of Wasilla, Alaska.

Surviving Paul are his first wife E. Bernadette Nuss (Molek) and their three children: Gretchen Kusmierz of Shillington, PA; Ingrid Nuss (Matt Taube) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Paul Nuss, Jr. (Esther) of Mohnton, PA; his six grandchildren: Kevin Kusmierz (fiancée, Danielle Dudak), Jason Kusmierz, Ryan Kusmierz, Ava Kusmierz, Logan Nuss, and Delilah Nuss; as well as his stepchildren, Jason and Andrew Sloaf.

Paul is also survived by his three siblings: Helen Terza (George) and Tamsen Nuss (Ken Sweeney), both of Altoona, PA, and David Nuss (Mandy) of Cortland, Ohio; and his companion, Mariemma “Mem” Miller of Dysart, PA; five nieces and nephews: Craig Terza, Christy Terza, Danielle Nuss, Deidra Nuss, and Desiree Lewis; two great-nephews, Sal Wilkerson and Ryder Terza; and one great-niece, Audra Carlheim.

Paul was a graduate of Cambria Heights High School and Saint Francis University. He operated the family-owned business, Mundy’s Welding Supply, until 1997. He then worked as a financial advisor for NEXT Financial; was a part-owner of Northern Storage and Gun Shop, and was a corporate pilot for Sheetz, Inc.

Aviation was a lifelong passion that brought Paul some of his greatest friendships and accomplishments. Paul became a pilot while still in his twenties, and later a flight instructor while operating Highland Flying at the Ebensburg, PA airport. He trained with the French Connection and competed in aerobatic competitions with his Pitts Special biplane.

He built a Whitman Tailwind and restored a 1946 Taylorcraft airplane earning the coveted Grand Champion honors at the EAA National Fly-In in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in 1991, then The Preservation Award in 2014.

Paul enjoyed hunting trips and was often found at 7-H Skeet Club or the Patton Sportsman Association. He was also an enthusiast of motorcycles and automobiles, participating in autocross racing when he was young and building a 1943 Ford Coupe Street Rod in his later years. He enjoyed traveling and camping, especially when it allowed him to escape the cold winter months.

He served as president of EAA Chapter 400 and president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. He was also an active member of the IAC Aerobatic Club and the National Rifle Association.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at the Baker-Sell private airport, located at 4686 Woodbury Pike, Woodbury, PA 16695. Those who are able to fly in are welcome to do so. Transportation from Altoona-Blair County Airport will be available for those unable to land at Sell’s airstrip.

I was saddened to learn of Paul's passing. I have many good memories of spending time with Paul, Bernadette and the kids at the airport, at out homes, the holidays and other good times. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you find comfort in memories that make you smile.

Only a year ago, seems like yesterday, Paul and Mariemma stopped by to visit us in NC. We told each other how great we looked. Indeed we did. When we were teens, Paul taught me respect for small game hunting and how to make model airplanes. Later on he made his best effort to teach me how to fly a real airplane. I never got there, but had fun trying. We did two visits to the EAA convention in Oshkosh, WI. Margaret once asked Paul to identify the engines in airplanes overhead while closing his eyes. He did it of course correctly. We shrugged. How would we know the difference ? We laughed. Our sincere condolences from Sue and me. We will miss him. Jim Turner
