Obituary For Paul N. Augustine

Paul N. Augustine Sept. 9, 1938-Jan. 7, 2022

Paul N. Augustine, 83, Altoona, passed peacefully Friday surrounded by his family. He was born in Bedford, son of the late M. Elwood and Mary (Schaeffer) Augustine. On Oct. 11, 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Steele at Ward Avenue Presbyterian Church, Altoona. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Sandy; three children and their spouses: Sue (Allen) Stevens, Steve (Lee) Augustine and Amy (Todd) Kavo; and six grandchildren who called him Pappy: Alex and Mitchell Augustine, Sierra and Joshua Cobler, and Sydney and Megan Kavo. Paul is also survived by his brother John (Joy) and sisters-in-law, Cathy and Sara Augustine. Paul was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Paul, who passed in 1963 and his brothers, M. Elwood Jr. and Fred Augustine. He was a 1956 graduate of Altoona High School. Wanting to earn gas money and to pay for college, Paul became a barber apprentice and barbered his way through college. He continued giving free haircuts through the years. He graduated from Penn State University with an engineering degree in 1958. He began his career as a draftsman at Hunter, Campbell and Ray Architects and at Veeder-Root, before taking a sales position at F.L. Smithe Machine Co., Inc. in 1966. He retired as sales manager in 2002 after 36 years of service. Paul enjoyed traveling the eastern part of the U.S. to meet with his customers. Together, he and Sandy made many friends at the conventions they attended. In the early years of their marriage, he and Sandy enjoyed their boat and cottage at the old Raystown Lake in Huntingdon. In 1971, Paul built the cottage at Indian Lake, where he taught his children to water ski and created many memories at the lake, at the card table and around the bonfire. He was one of the first contract holders at the former Blair Racquet Club where his men’s doubles group played tennis every Monday night for more than 20 years. Losers bought the beer. Paul and Sandy played in a mixed bridge club with their friends for many years. He was an avid Penn State and Steelers fan. Paul was a snow skier, frequenting Blue Knob and taking several family ski trips out west. He nicknamed himself “Fast Paul” on the slopes. About 25 years ago, Paul claimed he traded the snow for sand as he and Sandy bought an RV and began spending the winter months in Fort Myers, FL. They looked forward to being with their “RV family” for bike rides, the pool, happy hours and outdoor living. In 2006, Paul received a living-donor kidney transplant, graciously given through an act of love by his brother, John. He was a member of Ward Avenue Presbyterian Church, Hiram Lodge and Jaffa Shrine. Paul was an avid storyteller and was always quick with a joke. Friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, where masks must be worn for the visitation. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Children’s Erie, 1645 West Eighth St., Erie, PA 16505, in memory of Paul. Condolences may be made at www.stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook.

I met Paul when he was a drafting instructor at Altoona Campus. He later hired me as a draftsman at F L Smithe, In drafting class lettering was critical and Paul insisted on neat small detail and he wanted as much in a name block as possible. He did call my name "brown nosing" when I squeezed my full name into a name block. Richard Augustine McConnell, One of the best managers I ever worked for
