Obituary For Richard "Dick" J. Hollingshead

Richard J. “Dick” Hollingshead
August 13, 1943-April 24, 2026

Richard “Dick” J. Hollingshead, 82, of Altoona, passed away peacefully Friday, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Altoona, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Livoti) Hollingshead.

Dick was the devoted husband of Carol, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their eight children; Richard (Cathy), Rohna (Mike), Ranita (Brad), Joseph (Nancy), Rashel (Doug), Julene (Chris), Timothy, and Cara (Brendan); 18 grandchildren; Alexis, Gage, Shane, Jared, Braden, Michael, Jacob, Kevin, Nicholas, Christopher, Keira, Katie, Bryce, Paul, Jackson, Ryan, Bella, and Kade, who will miss their loving Pap Pap; brother Jeffrey (late Theresa) Hollingshead, and sisters-in-law Janey (Bill) Pennabaker and Doris (Jesse) Grassmyer. He was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon Hollingshead.

Dick graduated from Altoona Area High School in 1961. He served in the United States Army as a cartographer and was stationed in Germany.

Following his military service, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from The Pennsylvania State University in 1969. He spent his 32-year career as a bank examiner for the Pennsylvania Department of Banking.

Dick and Carol built a loving home in Altoona, where they raised their beautiful family. They were the center of his life and his greatest pride. A true role model, he was always there for his children - quietly proud, always present. His grandchildren brought him endless joy. Together, they made memories that will stay with them forever.

Dick and Carol shared a love of travel and adventure, enjoying trips around the world together. He was also an avid golfer who cherished time on the golf course with family and friends. A loyal sports fan, he loved following Penn State football, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the PGA Tour.

As a devout Catholic, Dick’s faith guided the way he lived his life and cared for others. He lived by his favorite mantra: “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.” He had a gift for making people feel at ease.

Dick will be remembered for his kindness, gentle patience, humility, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.

Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m., Thursday, April 30, 2026 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, May 1, 2026 at The Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament by Msgr. Stanley Carson. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to: St. Vincent de Paul Food for Families Soup Kitchen, 2201 Union Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601.
