Obituary For Richard "Dick" K. Carothers

Richard K. “Dick” Carothers Oct. 22, 1940-April 9, 2023

Richard K. “Dick” Carothers, 82, Altoona, passed away peacefully Sunday. Dick was born in Altoona, the son of the late Fred M. and Pauline (Kane) Carothers. He married Susan Criswell on August 20, 1966. He is survived by his wife of 56 years; three children: R. Brian Carothers (Peggy) of Altoona, Kim Ferguson (Harry) of Philadelphia and Tracy Carothers of Altoona and; ten grandchildren: Tommy, Jordan, Nick, Madison, Aaron, Grace, Elayna, Erica, Tyler (fiancée Destinee) and Kristina; a great-grandson, Jaxson is expected in June; a step-brother, Jack Sellers of Michigan; many nieces and nephews. Dick was preceded in death by his stepmother, Betty Carothers. He was a 1958 graduate of Altoona High School, a 1962 graduate of Penn State University and a 1986 graduate of Stonier Grad School of Banking. Dick served in the US Army Reserves from 1963-1969. From 1971 to 1999, Dick was employed with Central Bank retiring as Executive Vice-President. He then went on to work at Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission from 2000 to 2003 as their Microloan Program Manager and EAN Coordinator. Dick also worked for The Stevens Mortuary, volunteered as a greeter for the Altoona Area School District and was a volunteer at Altoona Hospital. Dick was a member at Park Hills Country Club, Mountain Lodge No. 281, F & AM, Valley of Altoona Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Jaffa Shrine Center, and Royal Order of Jesters. He was on the Executive Committee of Pennsylvania Bankers Association Group 6, Advisory Board of Pennsylvania Bankers Association Central Atlanta School of Banking, the Grant and Loan Committee of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission; Vice-President and Treasurer for the Board of Directors of Altoona/Blair County Chamber of Commerce for 12 years. Dick served as Chairman of the Board for Central Penn Region of the Pennsylvania Economy League for 15 years, was Vice-President and Treasurer for AAA Blair County Motor Club for 8 years. He was on the Board of Directors for United Way of Blair County for 4 years, Miss Pennsylvania Scholarship Pageant for 6 years as the Vice-President and Treasurer. Dick also was a member of Altoona Kiwanis Club for 20 years, the Altoona Jaycees and was on the board of Directors at Park Hills Country Club. Dick enjoyed golfing, watching Penn State and Pittsburgh Steeler Football, walking, going to the beach and most importantly, spending time with his family. Friends will be received from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm, Thursday, April 13, 2023 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602, where a Masonic service will be held. A funeral service will be held at 11 am, Friday, April 14, 2023 at Stevens Memorial Chapel with Pastor Drew McCaffery. Interment will be held at Alto-Reste Park.
