Obituary For Robert G. Civils
Robert G. Civils Nov. 11, 1929-Sept. 28, 2022 Robert G. Civils, 92, Altoona, passed away Wednesday at Graystone Manor at Bellemeade. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Kenneth and Louise (Kachele) Civils.
He married Donna M. Lytle on July 2, 1955, at St. Therese of The Child Jesus Catholic Church. She preceded him in death Nov. 4, 2014.
Surviving are his daughters: Cynthia Weyandt and her husband, Malcolm, of Roaring Spring and Lori Savino and her husband, Mike, of Altoona; five grandchildren: Danielle, Alexis, Jessica, Deanna and Michael; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Donna Wilt and her husband, Bill, of Altoona.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry and Earl Civils; and two sisters, Marlene Leonard and June Green.
Robert was a 1948 graduate of Altoona High School. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict from 1951-52. Robert was wounded in the line of duty and received the Purple Heart. He returned home and attended Penn State University from 1953-57 where he received his bachelor’s degree in education.
Robert retired from the Altoona Area School District in 1986 with more than 25 years as a biology teacher. Following his retirement Robert was an active volunteer at the Altoona Hospital, Blair County Convention Center and Railroaders Memorial Museum.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Unter Uns, Bavarian Aide Society, American Legion, VFW, Casey Jones Camping Club and PA State Education Association.
Robert enjoyed reading, listening to music, accessing the latest in technology, but he especially loved traveling with his wife, Donna, and spending time with family.
The family would like to extend their gratitude for the exceptional care given to Bob by the staff of Graystone Manor at Bellemeade and Fresenius Kidney Care Altoona.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona. A funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. in the Stevens Memorial Chapel with Mark Hoover officiating.
Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
The family asks that memorial donations be made in Robert’s memory to Altoona Area School District Foundation, 1201 Eighth Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
