Sabina Matilda “Sabby” Pierannunzio

January 5, 1924-September 1, 2025

Sabina Matilda “Sabby” Pierannunzio, 101, a resident since September 2020 at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formally of Altoona, passed away peacefully Monday morning at Garvey Manor, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Sabatino and Carmella (D’Agostino) Piccirilli. She married Bruno F Pierannunzio Sr on September 11, 1945 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Altoona. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1999.

Surviving are three children: Anne L. Saclaro of Hollidaysburg, Domenick “Dom” (Judy) Pierannunzio of Altoona, and Bruno F. Jr. (Judi) Pierannunzio of Dover, Del; daughter-in-law, Susan Pierannunzio of Baden; grandchildren: Lori (John) Brown, Theresa (Mark) Friedenberger, Anthony Pierannunzio, Matthew Pierannunzio (Billie), Angela (Robert) Monticelli, Domenick “DJ” (Amanda) Pierannunzio, Adam Pierannunzio, Marc (Sara) Pierannunzio, Daniel Pierannunzio, Maura (Derek) Herrera, and Travis Strobel; Twenty one great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She is survived by 4 generations of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Francis “Frank” Pierannunzio in 2022; her youngest granddaughter, Cheryl A. Strobel in 2024; four brothers: Paul, John, Albert, and Carmen Piccirrilli; two sisters: Frances Musselman and Mary Josephine Gallucci. Sabby was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Sabby was a 1942 graduate of Altoona High School. She briefly worked for Puritan Sportswear before becoming a homemaker.

Sabby was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church and was a former member of St Mark Roman Catholic Church.

She was a member of the former Abruzzese Society, Catholic Daughters of America and St. John the Baptist Society, Altoona.

Sabby led the exercise programs for senior citizens at Blair Senior Services, Inc. Altoona Center for many years.

Sabby enjoyed playing bingo, going to the Altoona Blair Senior Services Center, which she has been going to for over thirty years, crossword puzzles, dancing, festivals, watching The Price Is Right, and was an avid bowler with her husband, Bruno for many years, having bowled her last game at 90 years old. Both Sabby and Bruno were inducted into the Altoona Bowling Hall of Fame.

A special thank you to the religious sisters and the entire staff at Garvey Manor Nursing Home for all of their wonderful care of Sabby.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8pm on Friday, September 5, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at noon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 806 11th Street, Altoona, PA 16602.

Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

Psalm 127:3 “Behold, children are a gift from the Lord, a reward of the fruit of the womb.”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Garvey Manor Nursing Home, 1037 S. Logan Blvd., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648 in Sabby’s memory.
