Shirley Louise Voltz, 92, Altoona, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023 at UPMC Altoona Palliative Care Unit surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness. She was born in Altoona, the daughter of the late Thomas Lockard and Evelyn (Sponsler) Lockard. On August 11, 1951 she married Raphael J. Voltz II, who preceded her in death on March 27, 2009. She is survived by her four children Deborah (Craig) Decker, Raphael (Jacquelyn) Voltz III, Michele (Jack) Dietzel, and Marie (Shawn) Bettwy. She was the proud grandmother of five grandchildren: Bernadette (Dusten) Thompson, Matthew (Lisa) Decker, Raphael Voltz IV, Thomas Bettwy, and Kristen Bettwy; five great grandchildren: Mercedes, Marah and Morgan Thompson, Sophia and Lillia Decker. She was also preceded in death by her only sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Walter Porter.
Shirley was a graduate of Altoona High School class of 1948 and graduated from Altoona Hospital School of Nursing in 1951, where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She worked at the former Altoona Hospital, provided private duty nursing care, and was a volunteer nurse for the Blair County Respiratory Disease Center.
Shirley was a member Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where she was active in the resurrection choir and Christian Mothers. Her many years of civic duties included volunteering for the American Red Cross, serving on the Altoona Housing Authority Board of Directors and Community Housing Resource Board of Directors, participating as a member and secretary in the Blair County Republican Woman’s Organization, and had remained active in her Altoona Hospital Nursing Alumni and Catholic Nurses Associations.
Shirley’s passion was enjoying time with family and friends. She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing Dominos with her friends, and enjoyed following Pitt, Penn State, Notre Dame, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Friends will be received from 3:00-7:00 pm Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, Pa 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, August 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona, by Fr. James Dugan. Committal Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
