Shirley Marie (Hoover) Dougherty
Aug. 16, 1926 – May 8, 2023

Shirley Marie (Hoover) Dougherty, 96, Altoona, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday. She was the daughter of John and Marjorie (Conroy) Hoover.
Shirley was a lifelong resident of Altoona and graduated from Altoona High School in 1944.
She married James Dougherty on Sept. 28, 1946.
Shirley was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and a dear friend to countless fellow parishioners. Her faith and devotion to her church led her to work in the office at Mount Carmel and manage a booth at the annual church festival. Shirley was also a member of the Secular Franciscan Order and the Altar and Rosary Society.
‘Nana,’ as she was known to her seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, enjoyed numerous hobbies and activities including playing Bingo, crocheting, baking cookies, painting, tending to her rose garden and occasionally a glass of sweet red wine. She was known for her compassion and calm demeanor.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, James Francis; brothers, Gerald and Jack; a sister, Marty Ann; and grandson, Michael.
Surviving are her children: Cecelia Ratzesberger of Grain Valley, Mo.; Sherri Dougherty of Forest Lake, Minn.; and Patrick Dougherty of Altoona.
The family would like to express thanks to the employees and caretakers of Graystone Manor at Bellmeade and Medi Home Health & Hospice.
Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2023, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Committal will be at Calvary Cemetery.
