Silvio “Sam” DeGol
March 17, 1927-August 7, 2025
Silvio “Sam” DeGol, 98, passed away at Hilltop Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Altoona, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Glen White, the son of the late Anthony and Josephina (Balest) DeGol.
Silvio married Elizabeth DiBonto on December 31, 1949 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Gallitzin and they celebrated 75 years together. Elizabeth preceded him in death on June 6, 2025.
Surviving are his daughters: Judith Klingeman, Janet (Dave) Barroner, and Joyce DeGol and his son, Joseph (Lisa) DeGol. He was a proud grandfather to Justin (Dr. Meghan) Barroner, Dr. Jonathan Klingeman, Brittani (Ben) Kunkel and Dr. Joseph DeGol. He was great-grandfather to Marley, Remme, Daevaney and Hennessey Barroner, Carson, Lucya, Kallie and Gianna Kunkel. Sam is also survived by his brothers: Leno, Raymond, John and James (Betty Anne) DeGol.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Michael; son-in-law, Reverend John Klingeman; siblings: Candido (Genevieve) DeGol, Mary (Angelo) Taddei, Victor (Joanna) DeGol, Bruno (Lena) DeGol, Leo (Doris) DeGol, Dora (Bruno) Fabbri and sisters-in-law: Helen, Evelyn and Ann DeGol. Sam was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later retired from People’s Natural Gas Company in 1985.
Sam was an avid hunter, wine maker and gardener. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and enjoyed baseball, especially being a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. In his later years, Sam loved taking Jeep rides to Glen White and watching baseball with his son, Joe.
Friends will be received from 8-10 am, Thursday, August 14, 2025 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602. The funeral Mass will follow at 11 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2716 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601, with Fr. James Dugan, celebrant. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
