Obituary For Stanford "Pete" James Cogan

Stanford “Pete” James Cogan March 27, 1932-Sept. 16, 2021 Stanford “Pete” James Cogan, 89, of Riggles Gap, Altoona, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, September 16, 2021. After an extended illness with mesothelioma, he died at home surrounded by his four children he cherished. He was born in Altoona, son of the late John Wilbur and Violet K. (Chirdon) Cogan. Pete married the late Barbara Ruth Eisenhart on August 28, 1955 at First Baptist Church of Altoona, she preceded him in death on November 25, 2013. Pete is survived by his four children: Kathi Rutherford, Patti (Corey) Wilt, Bruce (Cathy) Cogan and Jeffrey Cogan all of Altoona; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren who were his great joy; a brother John “Jack” Cogan of Altoona and sister Molly Kelley of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by a beloved sister, Mary Joan Cogan. Stanford was blessed to celebrate more than 58 years of marriage to his best friend, Barbara and his large family of wonderful children. His family was always his first priority. He left a treasure trove of family memories time can never erase. He graduated from Altoona High School in 1950 and then served in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve during the Korean Conflict. He was the owner of Cogan Electric and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central Railroad, Conrail and Norfolk Southern Railroad. Pete taught engineering classes at the Penn State Altoona Campus for Railroad Engineering. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a long-time member serving on the Trustee Board and with the Food Pantry Ministries at First Baptist Church for many years. Friends and family will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 20, 2021 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602. A celebration of life will then be held at the Stevens Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021 with Pastor Tyler Pepper officiating. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
