Obituary For Thomas Francis Murphy

Thomas Francis Murphy Sept. 23, 1930-Sept. 24, 2021

Thomas Francis Murphy, 91, of Altoona, PA went to be with Our Lord on Thursday, September 24, 2021. He was born in Ashville, PA on September 23, 1930, to Thomas and Mary (Dougherty) Murphy.

Preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Joseph, and J. Patrick, and sisters Frances Ann, and Rosemary (Montler). Nephews Thomas Montler, Murphy Montler, and great nephew Nathan Montler. Beloved uncle of Robert Montler, Sheila Rowan, Joseph Montler, Therese Knob, Michael Montler, MaryAnne Righi, Daniel Murphy, Jamie Rising, Sean Murphy, Sally Dumenil, and Thomas Murphy. As well as the many great (great) nieces and nephews from both the Montler and Murphy sides of the family.

Tom loved family more than anything. He took pride in being one of the Murphy boys. You could find them eating in the Mercy and Altoona Hospital cafeterias together shooting the breeze and talking to all the pretty girls.

He was a Graduate of Cresson High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force. When his service ended, he attended Saint Francis College. He received a degree in accounting and went on to become the Business Manager for WFBG/WTAJ. His position allowed him to travel, which he loved. His favorite travel story was how he went to California for a convention, and he got to sit next to Mary Tyler Moore. If you knew him, you saw the picture he would proudly show off that he carried in his wallet. If you were ever at Broad Avenue Sheetz, you probably ran into him enjoying his coffee and scratching off his many (many) lottery tickets. He knew everyone, even if he couldn’t remember their names, which his brother Joe would always pick on him about.

Tom was blessed to reside at both Garvey Manor and Our Lady of the Alleghenies his last few years. The family thanks the staff for their compassionate care. He loved his girls.

Tom was a proud Irishman and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and The Legion of Mary. He was a firm believer in his faith and would visit the Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, VA every year to celebrate Easter. His laugh, his stories, and his kindness will be missed by all.

A funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 511 20th Street, Altoona, Pa. 16602, Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. with Fr. Lubomir Strecok officiating. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements are provided by The Stevens Mortuary, Inc., 1421 8th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602.
