William J. Hoyne, 82, of Altoona, Pa. passed away on March 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and daughter, Stephanie.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late William J. Sr. and Dorothy (Wade) Hoyne on August 22, 1943. At the age of 5, his family moved to Tyrone, Pa.
On August 18, 1979, he married Shirley (Bell) Hoyne, at Mount Aloysius College (in the office of his college roommate, Dr. James Gallagher).
Surviving are his wife and children: Randy (Kris) Riley, Stephanie (Todd) Turin, Christine Schimminger, Karen (Joe) Daly; William (Kristina) Hoyne. Grandchildren: Ryan (Macy Murren, fiancée), Madison and Shawn Riley: Trevor (Nicole) and Emma Turin (Cameron Kearns, fiancé); Malia, Michael, Nick, Luke Schimminger; Calla and Max Daly; Jack and Mia Hoyne.
William is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Richard (Carolyn) Hoyne; Thomas (Brenda) Hoyne; James (Cathy) Hoyne; Barbara (Michael) McNelis; Michael (Kathy) Hoyne and Patricia Hoyne. Brother-in-law David Zahursky. Special friend, Dr. James Gallagher; special niece, Maggie Hoyne; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
William was a 1961 graduate of Tyrone High School and attended Saint Francis University graduating in 1965 with a BA, Economics. He then attended Ohio State University; The National Mortgage School; Rutgers University/American Bankers Association; The Stoner Graduate School of Banking; Indiana University/Robert Morris Associates; and Robert Morris Associates of Mellon Bank through his 53 years in banking.
He served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Active Duty at Fort Jackson, South Carolina where he was certified as a marksman and awarded the Pennsylvania Service Ribbon.
Upon graduating from Saint Francis University, from 1965-1966 he served as a Management Trainee; 1966-1968 Assistant Cashier; Commercial Loan and Mortgage Departments; 1968-1969 as Assistant Vice President, Branch manager; 1969-1971 Assistant Manager, Commercial Loan and Mortgage Department at First National Bank of Altoona. 1974 – 2000, he held the position of Vice President, Regional Manager at Central Counties Bank/Mellon Bank, State College, Pa. From 1985- 1987, he served as Vice President, Branch Administration Division Head. From 1987-1995, First Vice President, Deputy Department Senior Credit Offices; 1995 – 1999 Business Banking Regional Manager; and 1999 to 2000 Government Banking, Manager Central Commonwealth and Northeast Regionals at Mellon Bank, State College, Pa. From 2000-2001 he served as Senior Vice President; Senior Loan Officer of First National Bank of Everett, Pa. From 2001-2012, he served as President/Chief Executive Officer at Mainline National Bank/Mainline Bancorp, Inc., Ebensburg, Pa. Ending his 53-year banking career at Kish Bank in State College, Pa. as Interim Executive Vice President/Chief Officer.
William’s professional and community involvement included, member, past President, Pittsburgh Chapter Robert Morris Associates; Co-Founder and past Chairman of State College Chapter of Robert Morris Associates, member of the Executive Committee of Altoona Blair County Development Corporation, Former Board member of Mercy/Bon Secours Holy Family Hospital; member, Saint Francis College Alumni Association and former member of the Epic Campaign Committee; Chairman Blair County Industrial Development Authority; Chairman Blair County Authority; past President of Altoona Chapter of the American Bank Club; past President of Blair County Bankers Association; past member of Governing Council Pennsylvania Bankers Association; past Chairman of Group VI Pennsylvania Bankers Association; former Treasurer and Board of Trustees at Mercy Regional Health System; former Instructor for American Institute of Banking; board member and Vice Chairman for the Pennsylvania Economy League; former board member for the Home Nursing Agency; former board member of United Way of Blair County; former board member with the Altoona Area Chamber of Commerce and former board member of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association.
William enjoyed spending time with family and friends who were like family, taking car trips especially with his dogs, listening to the scanner, tinkering at the farm, spoiling the grandkids and anything that Shirley was doing.
Friends will be received at 2-6 pm, Sunday, March 22, 2026 at The Stevens Mortuary, Inc. 1421 8th Ave. Altoona, Pa. 16602, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Monday, March 23, 2026 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont, Msgr. Michael Becker, celebrant. A private committal service will follow with Military honors.
