Obituary For William R. Sankey

William R. Sankey Dec. 7, 1939-Jan. 4, 2021

Bill passed away on Jan. 4, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Indiana, PA, son of the late William L. and Margaret (Slovensky) Sankey. On Nov. 26, 1966 he married Karen (Kerry) J. Smith at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years: two sons: Shawn Sankey and Matthew (Melissa) Sankey of Altoona: a daughter, Erin Sankey Bellinger (Todd) of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren: Max Sankey, Gabe Sankey, Lia Sankey, Will Sankey, Carson Bellinger and Malaney Bellinger; a sister Patricia Brown of Seattle, WA; a brother Frederick A. Sankey of Winter Haven, FL; a special sister-in-law, Judy Carlough; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Bill was a 1957 graduate of Altoona High School. He served 3 years in the US Army. In October 1998 after 32 years of service he retired from Bell Atlantic as a Switching Technician. He was a member of St. Marks Catholic Church. He also was a member of the Bavarian Aid Society, Cesare Battisti Club and The Ashville Bass Club. Bill enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He especially loved attending all his grandchildren’s sporting events. He attended many sporting events, it didn’t matter who was playing he would go with his friends and enjoyed all sports. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially the trip to Canada last summer with his sons, grandsons and special friends. Friends will be received from 1:00 p.m. until a 2:00 p.m. funeral Mass, Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 at St. Marks Catholic Church, 416 6th Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602, Father Ronald Osinski officiating.
